Richard Frank Adams (he/him) was a Filipino American gay rights activist and pioneer for marriage equality. In 1975, Adams and his partner, Anthony Sullivan, were one of the first gay couples in the United States to be granted a marriage license when they got married in Boulder, Colorado. Through their marriage, Richard Adams applied for and was denied permanent residency for his partner, who was an Australian National, on the grounds of homophobia. While the couple’s 1979 appeal in Adams v Howerton was denied in 1982, Sullivan’s visa petition was approved by the UCSIS in 2014, 2 years after Richard Adams passed away from cancer, and Sullivan was granted permanent residency in 2016.

This AAPI Heritage Month, we remember and celebrate Richard Frank Adams, a pioneer for equality and civil rights and liberties in our community.
