Let's talk about the educational (and racial) divide in America:

During COVID-19, teachers reported only seeing approximately 23% of all their students in real time on a daily basis. Teachers report the majority of child abuse cases in the US. Without teachers' eyes on children, an unknown and likely increasing amount of child abuse is occurring in the county.

Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous children on average are more than 14% less likely to have internet and computer access at home.

The combination of these two statistics means that black and brown children are at an even more heightened risk of abuse. It also indicates that a higher portion of black and brown children do not have the resources to receive the education their peers are currently getting.

This is blatant inequality. Black and brown children deserve so much more.

One teacher says 25 of his 90 students participate. Many who don't participate cite challenges related to working essential jobs, or taking care of siblings while parents are working long hours. Others know they won't be penalized for not logging on.

Child safety advocates are concerned about the welfare of children during the coronavirus shutdown. Calls to Pennsylvania’s hotline dropped 60% in April so advocates are asking residents to keep an eye out for child abuse and report it.
