PSJA AFT

PSJA AFT Texas AFT is affiliated with the 1.6-million-member American Federation of Teachers and the
AFL-CIO.

PSJA American Federation of Teachers is the force that will unite our employees, build relationships with our community, and stand against injustices through our collective efforts. Texas AFT represents more than 65,000 teachers and other Texas school employees--all nonadministrative certified and classified public school employees in traditional public schools and
some charter schools. We represe

nt the interests of teachers, counselors, librarians, diagnosticians, custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, nurses, teaching assistants, clerical employees, and the other men and women who work so hard to make our schools work. Texas AFT is a statewide organization encompassing 38 local unions and regional offices, and we are the only Texas school employee organization with a significant number of local unions and offices organized to provide direct representation for educators and school employees. TOGETHER, WE RISE. THIS IS MAY DAY.

They tried to bury it.
We’re bringing it back.

✊🏽 Solidarity. Resistance. Power.

👇🏽 Read why May Day still matters:

May 1 wasn’t given to us.
It was won by workers.

In 1886, workers across the U.S. walked out for the 8-hour day.
Chicago became the center of that fight. The system answered with violence.

That struggle didn’t disappear.
It spread.

Across the world, May 1 became International Workers’ Day.

But here in the U.S.?
They tried to bury it.

After uprisings like the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland moved Labor Day to September to separate it from worker power.

Because May Day isn’t just a celebration.
It’s a warning.

A reminder of what happens when workers organize, unite, and disrupt the status quo.

And that makes the powerful uncomfortable.

They want us divided—by race, by status, by where we were born.

But we know better.

An injury to one is an injury to all.

RGV AFT and the Texas AFT family will stand together on May Day!

May Day traces back to workers who risked everything for something most take for granted today: time, dignity, and fair conditions.

That legacy lives on in every union member, every educator, and every worker, still pushing for a better world now.

This May Day, we won’t just remember - we will organize. If you live in the Rio Grande Valley, join us for Marcha del Pueblo on May 2, 2026.

Ever wonder why May Day is a celebrated date ? It’s more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a day with an incredible history:
Power to the Workers: International Workers' Day! It honors the brave people who fought for things we often take for granted today, like the 8-hour workday and fair working conditions.
Join us as we join RGV AFT and the RGV CLC as well as other organizations across the valley to stand together in solidarity for workers rights on Saturday at the Marcha del Pueblo in Edinburg .

Last night, PSJA AFT showed up and spoke up. And we made it clear that your voices will not be ignored.

At the PSJA ISD Board Meeting, your union stood before leadership and spoke truth about what our members are experiencing.

But here’s the truth: a union is only as strong as the people behind it!
We can advocate. We can organize. We can speak at that podium, but real change happens when more of us stand together and refuse to stay silent! Fear keeps things the same. Courage changes them.

To every PSJA employee watching this, You are not alone! Your concerns are valid! Your voice matters!

If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to get involved, this is it. Join PSJA AFT today. Stand with your colleagues. Be part of something stronger than fear! Join today using this link https://connect.aft.org/app/memberforms/06597/edues or contact Cynthia Flores at 956-313-1307

Know your rights, educators 👇

In Texas public schools, classroom teachers and full-time librarians are entitled to at least a 30-minute duty-free lunch—no student supervision, no instructional duties.

There are limited exceptions (like staffing shortages or emergencies), but even then, a district cannot require you to cover lunch more than once per week.

❗And just to be clear: testing season doesn’t change the law. STAAR or any other testing is not an automatic exception.

If this isn’t being honored on your campus, that’s a problem - drop us a DM and tell us about it. You may also request physical Know Your Rights sheets for you and your colleagues.
