This Museum Monday we go back 54 years to a very unlikely place to hear about Pflugerville. This is the newspaper article that was with some old photos from 1937 in Pflugerville. One being of Dr. Nelson Lorenz Schiller M.D. standing pointing at an advertisement in the window of Leppin's Hardware. The second picture is of Leppin himself standing in front of his Hardware warehouse.

A Salute to Pflugerville, Texas

If you were visiting in Anchorage, Alaska and heard an Alaskan television announcer salute "Pflugerville Texas population 380" it would come as quite a shock, wouldn't it?
Well, that's what happened to Ms. Truman Thurman (Bee Caves Road) last week while she was a snowbound baby sitter with her grandchildren. It happened, she writes, on a program called "Hee Haw," but she had no explanation why Pflugerville was saluted. Sounds as if there must be a Cactus Pryor loose in the snow country.
"I was already homesick, but that made it worse," Mrs. Thurman writes. "Alaska is a beautiful country. The mountains are covered with snow and the trees are pretty, but I have looked at them 5 weeks now, and I want to see those Barton Creek hills and the cedars and live oaks in my yard at Bee Caves." Travis County, of course, is proud of Pflugerville, a small City with a tradition. By Alaskan standards. Pflugerville is in the big population bracket. Maybe that is the reason the TV station was saluting.
"They say the population of the entire state of Alaska is about the same as Austin, Texas." Mrs. Thurman continues in her letter. " That's easy for me to see. Everything is higher here. The wages are nice, but the rent, groceries and gas are so much higher that they make up the difference. Gas (auto) is 42 to 45 cents a gallon and a two pound loaf of bread is 79 cents....
"The people I have met are nice and friendly.... My daughter tells me I should stay until the temperature is 40 below, then I would know what Alaska is really like.... but if the good Lord is willing and the plane don't freeze up, I will be home soon."
Mrs. Thurman's letter was refreshing. It came Sunday after the sun came out following a week of clouds and what we call cold weather.
"When she gets home Vic Mathias should give her an honorary membership in the Chamber of Commerce. She has convinced us Austin and Pflugerville are better places to live.

Milan creates some or actually, the best Sauerkraut I've had. Along with sauerkraut he also makes all types of pickles and yes, those are super tasty too. Spicy... "Of courrrrrrrrse" as he always says😁
Not to forget that he also has a sweet side to him. His Chocolates; spicy of course are fantastic!

It is with great regret that we have to CANCEL the 11th Annual Heritage House Partners' Harvest Fest event. Due to the persistent rains, the grounds of Heritage House Museum Pflugerville Texas are completely saturated.
We will still have the Museum open from 1 to 4 pm Sunday afternoon.

What is it...
People often ask the Heritage House Partners, what is that big thing sitting in the back behind Heritage House Museum Pflugerville Texas
Well, now is a great time to answer that since our 11th Annual Harvest Fest is coming up Sunday, October 4th from 1 to 4 pm.
Back in the 19th and 20th centuries, processing grains such as Oats, Wheat and Barley was somewhat of a chore to say the least. Before the modern day Combines were invented there was the Thresher. It's a massive piece of equipment that did the jobs of many people both men and women. It kept them from having to Thresh the grain by hand which was very time consuming and physically challenging.
In the video below you will see how it works. First, they went out into the fields, gather the stalks of grain in ones arms and cut it off at the base near the ground. Then they would bind them with part of the stalks. They would then take their wagons pulled by Mules and pick up all of the bundles. At this point they would load the bundles into the Thresher and it would work the stalks back and forth within the machine causing the grain to fall into compartments and the straw then pushed out the back into big piles.
Threshers were expensive so farmers all around would get together and work from one farm to the next, harvesting each crop. Everybody worked together helping each other. Be sure to check it out when you come Sunday, October 4th from 1 to 4 pm.

Threshing machine
A threshing machine or a thresher is a piece of farm equipment that separates grain seed from the stalks and husks. It does so by beating the plant to make the seeds fall out. Before such machines were developed, threshing was done by hand with flails: such hand threshing was very laborious and time-consuming, taking about one-quarter of agricultural labour by the 18th century.[1] Mechanization of this process removed a substantial amount of drudgery from farm labour. The first threshing machine was invented circa 1786 by the Scottish engineer Andrew Meikle, and the subsequent adoption of such machines was one of the earlier examples of the mechanization of agriculture. During the 19th century, threshers and mechanical reapers and reaper-binders gradually became widespread and made grain production much less laborious.
