In remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr., we honor his legacy by continuing to take steps toward equality and righteousness within ourselves, our communities and our nation. That means that we must recognize the dignity in all of the people we encounter along our journeys.

Veterans, stay safe while online shopping by being wary of e-commerce scams.
Scammers may advertise highly discounted items through fake retail websites and online pop-up stores. Always verify the legitimacy of websites and sellers before making a purchase.
Veterans can follow these best practices to prevent e-commerce scams while shopping:
• Examine the URL: Look for “https” and a padlock which indicate a secure connection. Check for misspellings, unusual domain extensions or extra characters. Sites may resemble major retailers such as Amazon but include extra words in the URL.
• Evaluate the design: Poor grammar, spelling mistakes, or low-quality images may indicate a fake company.
• Check the contact page: Look for physical addresses, valid email addresses, and a working phone number. A lack of contact information is suspicious.
• Shop on verified retailer sites: Avoid purchasing an item directly on social media or an unverified site.
Veterans who suspect they have experienced fraud can find out more and report to the appropriate agency at VSAFE.gov or calling 833-38V-SAFE.
To report fraud, contact the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

January is National Mentoring Month, a time to recognize the power of guidance and support from mentors in our life. For veterans, a good mentor can make all the difference by helping navigate challenges, build new skills and open doors to opportunities. Many veterans find mentors within the ranks of DAV’s membership—people who understand their unique experiences and are ready to help them succeed.
Together, we can ensure every veteran has someone in their corner.
