As we close out pride month, I am feeling very reflective and grateful.

An important part of advocacy and systems change comes from understanding the community you live and work in.

Recognizing the demographics, the politics, the primary religious affiliation, the socioeconomic status of the locals… all of it. It matters so much in how you approach change so not to be performative but instead to be sustainable.

Part of that process is understanding local history. Who lives here? What’s the expected norm? How do people respond to change? It all matters.

It matters because rural small town communities are tied by family, both bloodlines and chosen community. Rural systems change looks different than in an urban setting. It requires a different level of consideration.

And often, like with the work we are doing here, it starts with small groups of people working from a place of passion, concern, drive and a desire to create change. Acts of service that are personally funded (both in time and money). And when done well, and carefully, and with strong intentionality, they grow.

I’ve learned from mentors, colleagues, and friends the hard lesson that sometimes, no matter how hard I fight against this… it can’t happen quickly.

It’s been seven years of slow consistent and very intentional work, now comes the growth.

I’m so grateful for our community members and our allies who continue to show up in support and understanding.

CALL FOR ARTISTS: Little Traverse Bay Pride Logo Competition

Little Traverse Bay Pride is excited to officially launch our community logo competition! We invite local artists, designers, and community members to help create the visual identity of our organization.

The Little Traverse Bay Pride Board will consider community feedback alongside the organization's long-term branding needs before selecting the winning design.

The selected artist will receive a $100 gift card to their choice of:

• McLean & Eakin Booksellers
• Ruff Life Pet Outfitters
• Grain Train Natural Foods Market
• Poetess & Stranger

In addition, the artist will be recognized as the creator of the founding logo design for Little Traverse Bay Pride.

Submission Requirements

Please include:

• Original artwork only. AI-generated artwork will not be accepted.
• High-resolution files in PNG, JPG, PDF
• A transparent background whenever possible.
• A brief artist statement describing the inspiration behind your design.

Please also provide:

• Artist name
• Email address
• Phone number
• Design title

E-mail your submissions to [email protected] with the subject line "LOGO ENTRY"

Design Guidelines

Your design should reflect the mission and values of Little Traverse Bay Pride by being:

• Inclusive and welcoming
• Representative of the LGBTQIA+ community
• Hopeful, positive, and community-centered
• Simple enough to reproduce across many formats

Designs should work well on:

• Social media profiles
• T-shirts
• Stickers
• Hats
• Banners
• Business cards
• Promotional materials

Artists are encouraged, but not required, to incorporate elements inspired by Northern Michigan, including Little Traverse Bay, water, shoreline, forests, sunsets, wildlife, or other regional imagery.

Selection Criteria

Entries will be evaluated based on:

• Creativity and originality
• Representation of Little Traverse Bay Pride’s mission
• Inclusivity and community spirit
• Practical use as an organizational logo
• Adaptability for print, merchandise, and digital media

Community voting will help recognize favorite designs, while the final selection will be made by the Little Traverse Bay Pride Board to ensure the logo best serves the organization’s long-term vision.

The selected submission will serve as the inspiration and foundation for Little Traverse Bay Pride’s official logo. The final logo may be professionally refined, simplified, or adapted to ensure it functions effectively across print, digital media, signage, merchandise, and other organizational materials while preserving the vision and artistic intent of the original design.

We cannot wait to see the creativity, talent, and vision within our community. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

🏳️‍🌈 WE ARE GROWING 🏳️‍🌈

With growth comes some changes that we are so excited to announce!

The LGBTQ+ Alliance of Petoskey is changing it’s name to be more inclusive of the community we serve and to re-brand the work we are doing to fit our mission and vision as a new Non-Profit org.

We are in process of finishing our non-profit status this summer and I could not be more proud to introduce you all to our current board members of the LITTLE TRAVERSE BAY PRIDE (LTBP) non-profit organization.

If you have been able to attend our 8th annual flag party in the park tonight (there is still time to come join us!) than you are already in the know of these exciting changes, but for those who could not make it, we are thrilled to share this news!

The goal of this shift is not to steer away from the work we’ve already been doing but to expand that work, that mission, and that vision within the little traverse bay, Charlevoix, and greater No-Mi area in a way that creates roots for stability and for growth.

We want this work to continue long after us. We’ve wanted to make this move for a long time but, as life would have it, we needed to wait until the right time, and the time is now!

You will see a lot more news about what’s happening, the input we need from all of you, and what the future holds in the coming days.

Pride is every day, all year long. Our big annual event might be done for this year, but the work has only just begun!

We will be keeping the LGBTQ+ Alliance of Petoskey as a subtitle to our work in this transition. After seven years, people have grown to know, love, recognize and support this name and we don’t want to lose any of that in the confusion of this change!
