Every year the Cheetos Club honors the legacy of Spencer Tibbits on September 28th which was his birthday and also the day he died in a car accident eight years ago.

We are honoring his legacy in two manners this year. First, we are encouraging acts of kindness within our group and community. Second, we are sharing the exciting news that Cheetos Club is partnering with Northmen Den Youth Services to spread kindness further into our schools and community.

The mission of Northmen Den Youth Services is to nourish our neediest students by providing food, tutoring, and mentoring in a manner that respects dignity and individuality, while sustaining dreams.

We feel like the collaboration of the Cheetos Club and Northmen Den Youth Services will spread true acts of kindness in a deeper and broader manner while touching even more lives for good. Details will follow on this collaboration, but we welcome your support in this endeavor.

Take time today to plan for kindness and remember a compassionate young man whose small acts of kindness have truly changed the world. 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙙! 🌼

Here’s what PHS teachers had to say about the kindness delivered their way during Teacher Appreciation Week May 2-6, 2022, in a weeklong effort spearheaded by the Cheetos Club members! Pictured is the newly redesigned kindness wall in the PHS Pit, undertaken by the Cheetos Club to unveil in time for Teacher Appreciation Week.

💙 THANK YOU for everything. I am proud to work with all of you and am amazed at everything you do as teachers, as coaches, as advisors, as mentors, as role models, as chaperones, as subs, and SO MUCH MORE!

🤍 Thank you Cheetos Club, NHS, Petoskey Community Businesses, PHS Admin and STUDENTS, Culinary staff and students (and anyone else I missed)!

💙 Thank you never seems to be quite adequate when something as big as this "operation" comes together. But, I THANK YOU ALL.

🤍 All of us love our kids (students)! We love working with them and watching them grow and make relationships. Sometimes, it's all the "other stuff" that can make teaching really difficult. Sometimes, this "other stuff" derails me from my focus of simply loving kids and helping others.

💙 It is through reminders such as "Teacher Appreciation Week," that I am able to regain my focus, positive attitude and energy for this last stretch of the school year. Everyone who made this appreciate week possible - please know how very much appreciated I feel.

🤍 Thank you especially for thanking us! Thank you for taking (even more) time out of your busy schedules to appreciate your colleagues. I am very honored to work here and am very touched by your generous giving of time and resources. 💙

Last week, the Cheetos Club went into high gear to show teachers at PHS their appreciation for them, during Teacher Appreciation Week! Following is an email sent to teachers to kick off the week, and some photos of the club members in action making it a memorable week of kindness at PHS!

𝑯𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑾𝒆𝒆𝒌!
The PHS Community, Cheetos Club, NHS, PHS Administration and your PHS students have come together to put on a special week to truly appreciate you! We have come up with the idea for a "five course meal" in which we choose a theme for each of the five days of the week.
✔️ Monday - Bread (Crooked Tree Breadworks)
✔️ Tuesday - Appetizers (National Honor Society and PHS Administration)
✔️ Wednesday - Soup and Salad Lunch (PHS Community - Common Angle )
✔️ Thursday - Pesto Chicken Bruschetta (PHS Community - Common Angle)
✔️ Friday - Dessert (Kilwins)
Additionally, you won't need to make lunch on both Wednesday and Thursday as a local business - Common Angle - has worked with the culinary arts students to provide lunch both days in the culinary arts room. Please enjoy all the hard work the students are doing for this lunch.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Special thanks to Crooked Tree Breadworks, Common Angle and Kilwin's for supporting the Cheetos Club in our appreciation efforts!

We welcomed Petoskey High School teacher Lance Bailey and four students, Leif, Sadie, Collin, and Quinn. They came to share the message of kindness, something they do through the Cheetos Club at Petoskey High School.

The inspiration for the club came upon the tragic death of Spencer Tibbits seven years ago in a car accident. He died on his 17th birthday. At Spencer's funeral, several stories about his kindness emerged. Most notably the story of a young girl that Spencer saw was crying and sat down next to her to cheer her up. He reached into his backpack and pulled out a bag of Cheetos which he gave to her and said, "nobody can be sad when they're eating Cheetos."

From there, the Cheetos Club was born.

At the moment, around 100 students are part of the Cheetos Club at both the high school and middle school levels. Twenty-five make up the core group, and there is a support group of around 40 members available to help when needed.

Their mission is to share and to promote kindness within the schools. They do this through "confetti kindness" by giving birthday bags to students with birthdays, decorating lockers, and welcoming kids to school on special days. They also re-claimed the overgrown courtyard at the high school to create attractive, open-air spaces where kids can gather.

The next phase is to pursue a "deep kindness," the kind where you don't run from, but instead run to someone in need. Part of that is reaching out to new students in the school. A mentor program is also planned, as well as outreach to other schools. Some schools are already starting to emulate the Cheetos Club with groups of their own. Sadie talked of a bad situation at her old school, and she has now gone back there to share the Cheetos Club's concept with them. It's also going international as a former exchange student from Japan has taken the idea back to his country.

It was a powerful message from a passionate instructor and four articulate PHS students. The standing ovation was well deserved!
