Public Announcement!
Petersburg Fire Department Clothing Drive
December 1 – December 15, 2025

The Petersburg Fire Department is proud to partner with Acts 29 in Springfield, a church dedicated to serving the unsheltered, to host a Clothing Drive this holiday season.

We are collecting all types of clothing, including coats, socks, and underwear, to support Acts 29’s mission in the Springfield area. This is a wonderful opportunity to clean out your closets and share the gift of warmth and generosity with those who need it most.

To ensure local needs are met, PFD has also coordinated with Anne at Give N’ Take in Petersburg. Any excess donations will benefit this local organization, helping residents right here in our community.

Drop-Off Details:
Location: Petersburg Firehouse
Items: Place outside the front door in waterproof bags
Alternate arrangements: Text Deputy Chief Chris Henderson at 217-652-3060

Your compassion and contributions will make a real difference. Thank you for helping us spread warmth and kindness this holiday season!

Just a reminder: we will have worship as usual on Sunday at 8 and 10:30. We don’t close due to inclement weather. Worship is too important. With that said, if you have a mobility impairment or feel unsafe driving, then we encourage you to stay home and watch the YouTube feed. Meanwhile, kick back, watch the snow, and have a cup of coffee or tea. God bless you!

We’re working with St.Peter, the VFW, and the food pantry to bring back the free Thanksgiving Community Dinner — from 11 to 1:30 on Thanksgiving Day at the old Gillmore’s/Mom & Pop’s. Music by Wild Columbine.

Pets are such a blessing to us, so join us, and bring your pets, to our Blessing of the Animals at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. All are welcome at this short service! We'll hold it on the grounds of the Edgar Lee Masters' home adjacent to the church. And we'll have some gifts to give away too!

We wanted to let you know that there was an accident several days ago at the church -- a car crashed into the northeast corner of the building. We want to stress that it was an accident; it was not intentional. There were no injuries -- either to the driver or to anyone in the building. Thankfully, our trustees and Ozella Construction were there quickly to close up the hole until more permanent repairs can be done.

Friends,
I am deeply saddened by the shooting death of Charlie Kirk. All death diminishes us — regardless of whether we agree with that person.

Sadly, political violence is embedded deep in our culture and our world. In fact, our parsonage abuts Lincoln New Salem, a park dedicated to the memory of our 16th president, who died on April 15, 1865, from an assassin’s bullet.

I write this to you all in hopes of dialing down the angry social media posts and inflammatory rhetoric coming from both sides in the wake of Mr. Kirk’s death. Perhaps his death might finally move us toward some semblance of a political cease fire in this country — rather than just another round in escalating rhetoric and violence.
Yours in faith,
Pastor Rick
