Title of the presentation: New Market Campaign
Speaker/Author: Sarah Bierle

About the Book
The New Market Campaign How did the armies get to New Market for the battle on May 15, 1864? What were the objectives of the campaign? How did this campaign and battle fit into the overall strategic plans for the war in Virginia? This presentation delves deeper in the New Market Campaign and reexamines its challenges and outcomes of the famous battle. This battle was made famous in that the Cadets from VMI were called into battle and the battle would forever be known as “The Field of Lost Shoes.”

Sarah Kay Bierle graduated from Thomas Edison State University with a BA in History and works in the Education Department at American Battlefield Trust. She has spent years exploring ways to share quality historical research in ways that will inform and inspire modern audiences, including school presentations, writing, battlefield tours, and speaking engagements. She has published seven books, including "Glorious Courage: John Pelham in the Civil War" (Savas Beatie, 2025) and "Decisions at Chancellorsville" (University of Tennessee Press, 2025).

Did you know that Decoration Day was formally established on May 5, 1868, by Major General John A. Logan, then serving as the leader of the Union veteran organization known as the Grand Army of the Republic?

He selected May 30 as the date for the nation to decorate the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers, as spring flowers would be in bloom. 🌷🪻🌷🪻🌷

Over the decades, Decoration Day was expanded to honor all American 🇺🇸 military members who died in battle, was subsequently renamed Memorial Day and moved to the last Monday in May.

We thank Major General Logan for creating Memorial Day and we gratefully remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice during their military service. 💔 🙏🏼 🌹

Member Jim Spaturo talked about his visit to Florida’s Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park. This battle was a decisive Confederate victory. It’s a must-see in the Gainesville area!

The Battle of Olustee (fought on February 20, 1864) dashed Lincoln’s hopes for a federal-friendly government in Florida ahead of the 1864 election. Plus it protected the critical inland supply line that provided Florida cattle and crops to Confederate armies. It deterred the Union from further deep offensives, ensuring Tallahassee remained the only Confederate capital east of the Mississippi never captured.

Gen. Grant takes Command, moves East and keeps Gen. Meade in Command of the Army of the Potomac

Presented by Curt Fields. A first person presentation by the official Gen. Grant.
THIS IS A DON'T MISS PROGRAM!!

It’s 1864, after the Battle of Gettysburg, the Civil War in the east is basically at a standstill with both Generals Meade and Lee jockeying for battlefield positions – and what is becoming more important – the North is becoming war weary!

It is at this point, after his victories at Vicksburg and Chattanooga, that Pres. Abraham Lincoln summons Gen. Grant east to take command. Coming as a continuation of the lectures of Prof. Jennifer Murray of Gen. Meade, the NJCWRT presentations continue with Gen. Grant now in command.

Dr. Curt Fields is noted for his first-person presentation, in uniform, as the definitive Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Dr. Fields is a highly sought after speaker on a nationwide basis. He has also been referred to as the official Gen. Grant. Presented in a conversational style, when you listen you almost feel that Gen. Grant is in your living room speaking to you!

Dr. Fields has been a teacher of middle school to graduate classes. He is also a former Memphis, TN, police officer and was a member of the Hostage Negotiating team for the police department. He holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State in Educational Administration and Curriculum.
He has been a life-long student of the Civil War and when he was made aware of his physical resemblance to General Grant, decided to portray Grant in a first-person persona to effectively use his physical stature and build to "show" people what General Grant looked like.
