March 19, 1982 Sergeant Mike Goff made the ultimate sacrifice at a building fire on Franklin street in Petersburg. Mike was a 8 year veteran of the Petersburg Fire Department and assigned as the Sergeant of Truck 2 the night of the incident.

The initial call was received around 6:30pm for smoke coming from the basement of a building at 101 N. Sycamore street. A second alarm was called when Initial crews arrived and realized that the fire had already engulfed a large part of the building causing civilians to be trapped on the upper floors.

As crews worked to rescue a lady trapped on a 3rd floor balcony, Sergeant Goff was in the alley off Franklin street attempting to force entry to the building.

Suddenly, a series of gas explosions occurred in the basement causing the building to collapse, burying Sergeant Goff under the debris. It wasn’t until 2am the following night that crews located Mike’s body and he was removed by members the Petersburg Fire Department

It was a horrific day in the history of the Petersburg Fire Department. Not only did the department lose one of their own, 30 firefighters were injured and one civilian was killed as a result of the explosion.

Please take a moment to remember the brave men, and the selfless sacrifice Sergeant Goff made 43 years ago to protect the citizens he was sworn to serve.
