When outside temperatures drop dangerously low, skunks, raccoons, chipmunks and opossums are known to go into a temporary hibernation. During those frigid periods, they seek shelter in trees, logs, beneath rocks or underground where they "hole up" and sleep for about five days until the weather breaks.

Many plants and animals make the most of a blanket of snow. Air is trapped amongst the snow flakes and this provides good insulation. The temperature under a layer of snow does not usually fall below freezing. The heat from any animals or plants under snow is trapped in a warm ‘igloo’. Small mammals can remain active throughout the winter, searching for plant food in a network of tunnels under the snow.

Suet is a great food to offer many of the birds that will visit backyards in the winter. Suet is a high energy, pure fat substance which is invaluable in winter when insects are harder to find and birds need many more calories to keep their bodies warm.
