Thank you so much for everyone who came out last night to view “The Negro Plays Hero”. The love was definitely felt across the board. If you didn’t get a chance to catch it the Gallery will be open next week.

Come meet the Artist Droquemore next Friday or check out one of the events he’ll be hosting throughout the month.

Something special is happening at The Haus next month 🖤

We are proud to present “The Negro Plays Hero” and even more proud to welcome Droquemore as our founding resident to kick off Haus & Market Foundation’s Artist Residency Program.

14 portraits. Months of research. Graphite and ballpoint pen. A tribute to the men of the Negro Leagues who turned the baseball diamond into one of the earliest stages for Black excellence to be fully seen.

For the entire month of October, this work lives at Haus, and we’ve built a full month of experiences around it: gallery hours, a youth workshop, an intimate artist talk, open sketch sessions, and objects from the Haus collection in conversation with the work.

This is chapter one of a bigger story, and we’re honored to be the space where it opens.

Found a gem during our Sunday archive exploration.

This one’s been in the collection a while; the title alone was enough to grab it. But today we learned the author, Harold Cruse, was a Petersburg native. Born here in 1916, before he wrote The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual.

So much of our local history hides in plain sight—on bookshelves, in family photos, tucked in old newspaper clippings; waiting for someone to ask one more question.

Preservation is a choice about which stories get remembered.

What else is waiting to be rediscovered in Petersburg? 🖤

We’re honored to share that we’ve been granted a beautiful opportunity to take Petersburg students to experience GIANTS: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz & Alicia Keys at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

This experience is about more than a museum visit, it’s about access, reflection, and seeing yourself represented in powerful contemporary Black art. Students will engage in guided conversation, storytelling, and collective viewing inside one of Virginia’s most respected cultural institutions.

We extend our deepest thanks to for sponsoring this experience and making these tickets available for our youth. Opportunities like this matter.

🎟️ We have a few spots still available. There are two dates to choose from.
Seats are limited, scan the QR code (link is also in bio) to register your student and join us for this special moment.

Community. Culture. Exposure.
This is the work. 🖤
