What is the Walk in Europe? The Walk in Europe is an experiential learning program which takes students on a semester long journey through Europe. Each Walk consists of 20 to 30 students who, led by their Walk leaders and assistants, walk an average of 15 to 20 miles a day. The group lives outdoors together, sleeping under a 30′ by 30′ tent, mapping their route as they go each day. Walk groups mai
nly stick to country roads, hiking trails, and small towns, with stops in a couple of major cities - such as Florence, Munich and Paris – for cultural sightseeing along the way. But the Walk is about a lot more than just walking. It’s an opportunity for young minds to engage the world free from the restraints of their day-to-day lives. The affect of the Walk’s education on participating students is often nothing less than spectacular. Parents, teachers and friends literally marvel at returning walker's sharper focus to academic commitment, joyful attitudes, and newfound maturity.
“They walked for 40 days. Their aim, not to climb every mountain peak, nor study leaves, nor bird watch. Not to follow the Appalachian Trail, or make a study of New England towns. But to walk, and to learn whatever there was to be learned along the way. The idea was ages old, the basis of any real education. Not a knowledge of chemistry or literature, but a knowledge of one’s self. They learned a lot about themselves, as students, as men and women, as Americans.”
