During the Wreaths Across America event, cadets from the Monadnock Squadron paid a visit to the grave of William Diamond, the Lexington drummer boy (image of the Spirit of ‘76). On the night of April 18, 1775, William Diamond, then nineteen years old, was ordered by John Hancock to guard the house in Lexington where he was staying. That night, after Paul Revere passed through on his horse trip to awaken ‘every Middlesex village and farm’ and the word came that the British were approaching, Hancock instructed William Diamond to beat the reveille, and this ‘long roll of the drum was the first overt act of the Revolution.’ 1

Cadets from the Monadnock Squadron traveled to UNH to participate in the Sea Coast Sea Perch competition. They performed admirably with grit and perseverance - and learned a little bit along the way too!

It was the bloodiest battle in Marine history, claiming the lives of 6,800 Marines, and amassing a total of 26,000 casualties.

After many days of fighting U.S. Marines would raise “Old Glory” atop Mount Suribachi, the island of Iwo Jima’s highest peak, on February 23, 1945. The photograph captured of this act soon made newspapers around the globe and ultimately became one of the Corps’ most renowned moments.

May we never forget that fateful Island where, "Uncommon valor was a common virtue."

Here's a small sampling of Monadnock Squadron cadets supporting Wreaths Across America this year. In Peterborough volunteers laid 207 Wreaths. Nationwide 2.7 million wreaths were laid today. Thank you to Kaitlynne Foote of the local Girl Scouts of America for being a local site coordinator. We will continue to Remember. Honor. Teach.
