At SERRA Equine Rescue, our horses are surrounded by compassion, open space, and the beauty of Sonoma County while they wait for their forever homes. Every grooming session, every quiet moment in the pasture, and every act of care helps our rescued horses rebuild trust and feel safe.

Your support makes this possible. Donations help provide feed, veterinary care, farrier services, shelter, and daily care for the horses who come to SERRA needing a second chance.

Please consider making a gift today to support the horses in our care:

Earth Day feels especially meaningful here at SERRA. For many of the horses who come to us, this is the first time they’ve had soft ground under their feet, fresh air and space to just be horses again. The earth heals them just as much as we heal them. Today we celebrate this beautiful place—and the second chances it makes possible.

Happy Earth Day!!

Meet Chessy.

Chessy is a 10 to 12-year-old mare who was recently welcomed to SERRA after being rescued from a neglectful and abusive situation.

When she arrived, her hooves were severely overgrown, and she was dealing with a damaged knee that is now arthritic. She had also very recently weaned a foal. One of the most heartbreaking signs of what she has endured is that her tail had been cut off, leaving her unable to swat away flies or protect herself in such a basic, natural way.

Right now, Chessy is safe.

Our team is focused on assessing her condition, supporting her comfort, and determining the best path forward for her care and recovery. She has a long road ahead, but she is finally in a place where she will be treated with patience, kindness, and respect.

We are so grateful to be part of her next chapter.

If you would like to support Chessy’s care, your donation helps provide the medical attention, hoof care, feed, and daily support horses like Chessy need to heal.

Sometimes, the hardest part of loving a horse is knowing you can no longer be the one to care for them.

For Steven and Paula Wright, that moment came when they needed to find the right home for their wild Mustang horses. What they found at SERRA Equine Rescue was not just a solution, but a sense of relief, trust, and peace.

“We had an incredible and truly magical experience with Serra Horse Rescue in Petaluma, California. At a time when we were desperately trying to find the right home for our wild Mustang horses, everything seemed to fall into place.

We were connected with Sahar Bartlett, a board member of SERRA, and her communication was excellent, prompt, clear, and transparent throughout. What stood out most was the compassionate and thoughtful approach, ensuring a smooth and comfortable transition for the horses every step of the way. We felt a tremendous sense of peace knowing they were in such good hands.

A special shout out to Hilary Hansen, who took such kind and attentive care of the mustangs on their journey to their new home.

We wholeheartedly recommend Serra Horse Rescue to anyone looking for knowledgeable, reliable, and deeply compassionate care for their horses.”

Meet Tiny!

We recently welcomed a new horse to the rescue—Tiny, a very handsome 16hh Paint gelding who is 20 years old. Tiny came to us when his owner learned he would be moving and was no longer able to keep him.

Tiny does have arthritis in his legs, and our veterinarian has advised that he is no longer suitable for riding. Earlier in his life he worked as a roping horse, and shortly after that his owner acquired him. Over the years he has enjoyed many trail adventures—riding in both large and small groups, traveling mountain trails, crossing water, and even pulling a wagon. He has also safely carried small children.

Today, Tiny is enjoying a quieter pace of life. He is a very sweet, gentle, and docile horse who gets along well with other horses and has already won the hearts of our volunteers.

Tiny would make a wonderful companion horse for someone looking to give a kind, well-mannered horse a safe and loving home for his retirement years. 🐴😍

Our beautiful, bonded pair of Polish Arabians, Kiki and Johnny, have found Nirvana together with their lovely adopter Elise. Kiki follows her around like a little puppy dog and Johnny is having the time of his life. We’re so thrilled for them and Elise.
Thank you Elise!

We had to share this special moment with you.

Rocky enjoying an afternoon serenade from our wonderful volunteer, Mark, who brought his trumpet to the barn and played for the horses.

They stood there so quietly, ears forward, completely at ease. It’s hard to describe how meaningful moments like this are. When horses first arrive at SERRA, many are unsure and guarded. Over time, with steady care and the kindness of this community, they begin to relax into their new life.

Seeing them comfortable enough to simply listen, curious and calm, reminds us how far they’ve come.

This is what rescue looks like. Not just safety and good feed, but connection. Volunteers who show up with their whole hearts. Supporters who make the work possible.

If you’d like to help us continue caring for Rocky and the rest of the herd, we welcome your support. Your donations and shares truly keep this barn full of second chances.

Thank you for being part of it!

Meet Khalessi & Kalio: A Bonded Pair Looking for Their Next Chapter Together!

Khalessi (5) and Kalio (18) are both beautiful Percheron mares who spent most of their lives living naturally on 380 acres in a herd of 20–25 horses. They grew up in open space, with room to roam and strong social bonds, and over time, they became each other’s steady presence.

Khalessi is bold, curious, playful, and full of personality.
Kalio is gentle, sensitive, and deeply affectionate once trust is built.

About five-year-old Khalessi:

Both of her parents were registered Percherons, and she carries the classic draft intelligence and charm the breed is known for. She has not been ridden and does not have formal training, but she has had consistent handling and is described as a quick, willing learner.

She loves people and treats! She’s playful, curious, and sometimes a little mischievous (tools and hats beware 😉). With a confident and experienced handler, she has tremendous potential.

18-year-old Kalio is registered as Cassie with the Percheron Horse Association of America. Kalio is a gentle-hearted mare who looks to her human, or best friend, Khalessi, for reassurance and leadership.

She did not receive extensive early training, but Cassie is kind, willing, and deeply sweet. She loves grooming time, and once she trusts you, she will stand quietly and soak in the connection.

We would love to see these lovely ladies placed together in a thoughtful, experienced home where their bond can continue and where each of them can thrive.

If you feel called to learn more about this beautiful pair, please reach out to SERRA to learn more!
