www.owlfoundation.net/DONATION.htm We live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Surrounded by Sonoma Mountain to the East and the Petaluma Hills to the West, our open spaces are a visual delight that make our town of Petaluma an inspiring place to live. These spaces are home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna -- old oaks, open grassland, hundreds of songbird

s, raptors and fowls, California Red-Legged frogs, Bobcats, Coyotes, Foxes, and even and occasional Mt Lion. We have the privilege to sometimes see wildlife in their habitat areas and share this natural phenomena with our children. Many of our wild species are rapidly losing ground to encroaching human development and these open spaces represent a critical refuge. The West Petaluma Hills comprise a wildlife corridor – important for wildlife movement, foraging and survival. These woodland and grassland habitats with their abundance of wildlife can only be maintained if we are good stewards. This includes preservation - protection from development causing habitat loss and habitat fragmentation. Presently, some parcels in the heart of the West Petaluma Hills are for sale or planned for development. These lands are essential natural open spaces, part of the wildlife corridor for animals and migratory birds, and also help connect two other essential wildlife corridors to the Marin and Sonoma coasts. One property on Paula Lane in the north area of the West Petaluma Hills Wildlife Corridor has been conserved for permanent open space. Conserving additional lands
will help protect this important wildlife corridor in perpetuity. Where is this wildlife corridor? Lands visible from Windsor Lane between Western Avenue and D Street/Extension are central in the West Hills Wildlife Corridor. Familiar land names are La Cresta Ridge and Ravine and the Kelly Creek property. Helen Putnam Regional Park borders the wildlife corridor. North of Western Avenue, Bodega Avenue and Paula Lane toward Penngrove and Cotati is a critically important habitat and movement area. And westward, open land along Bodega Highway to the Sonoma coast, both habitat and
movement areas. South of Windsor Lane, the D Street Extension west to the Novato Hills in Marin County, to Nicasio, Pt. Reyes and the
Marin coast. Without preserving the remaining open lands in the West Petaluma Hills, this important connecting wildlife corridor will be lost.

To all of you who love the West Petaluma Hills near the water towers. 5 acres, 450 Hayes Lane, have been sold. As you know, it always feels like an uphill battle to preserve or give care to open space, not only for people and community, but for allowing nature to persist close to us.

This is an open space contingent to and near the water towers. Every encroachment to open space needs to be evaluated. Unfortunately, this property was purchased with the intent to build a house, now with Petaluma City planners approval. The owners have notified the neighboring community of their plans, and will have a zoom meeting Thursday, Feb 17th, at 6:00pm. This is required prior to a public hearing with the Planning Commission. The applicants will present an overview of the project and will be available to respond to our comments and questions.

The land is an open area of knolls and woodland people have enjoyed for decades. There are views of Helen Putnam Park and Sonoma Mts. Wildlife, oak trees, native plants and a seasonal creek lives here. With all the new housing occurring in town, it's even more important people have a place of green and beauty to explore and decompress close to town. Could you please send this out to all your local contacts, to join a zoom meeting with the owners on Thursday, Feb 17th.

Meeting ID: 707 535 9137 Passcode: Hayes

Please attend if you can. Let us know if you have any questions.

We look to the West of Petaluma, and see the knolls and hills. The area is dry from the drought, but the native Oak Trees look green, and the Deer and Wild Turkeys continue to do their thing. Please let our City of Petaluma know, this area should not have the potential to build more houses, change the zoning from R-1 to open space. Now is the time with the Petaluma General Planning in progress. Save this habitat for our community and for the native life. This is an open space that is part of the Petaluma watershed that gives water to our water tables in the Petaluma Valley. It should never be covered with housing.

Last Sunday we had our North Bay: West Petaluma Hills Nature Walk. It was misty and with an occasional light shower. It was fun, beautiful and enjoyed with a great group of people!
The mist provided for more wild flowers to saunter through this weekend!
Greenbelt Alliance, thank you for sponsoring this event and supporting West Petaluma Hills Coalition!

West Petaluma Hills: open space forever

A reminder about our mission!

Our goal is to acquire and preserve 30 acres of open space in the West Petaluma Hills near Helen Putnam Regional Park. This land is privately owned and at risk of development. We are currently focused on acquiring 13.61 acres commonly known as "La Cresta Ridge and Ravine". This central parcel abuts already conserved open space on three sides. Acquisition would create uninterrupted conserved open space along the ridgetop and hillsides.

This natural area is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, with native grasses and wildflowers. The woodlands are comprised of oaks, bay laurel, toyon and buckeye trees. In addition to songbirds and raptors, sightings of bobcats, coyotes, fox, deer, hares and rodents are frequent. This land represents a critical open space for our community, where children and their families often take refuge by walking and playing in this beautiful setting. In addition, Petaluma's elementary, middle and high schools are within a mile of this open space.

The west Petaluma hills are an integral part of the Petaluma watershed that provides groundwater for the Petaluma valley. We wish to maintain a greenbelt and preserve the scenic vistas of the west Petaluma hills for all to enjoy in perpetuity. More news on our new-and-ambitious plans to come early in 2019.

Please join us in acquiring and conserving this beautiful open space in the west Petaluma hills. Your year-end tax-deductible donation is greatly appreciated! Let us now if you want to participate. Thanks so much for making this happen!
