Petaluma River Park is a rare riverfront parkland in the heart of downtown Petaluma.

It comprises approximately 35 acres of undeveloped land over two sites: on the McNear Peninsula and directly across the McNear Channel at 500 Hopper Street.

After a revealing and impactful Chinese Coastal Story project this past spring, our next centers oral histories untangling the rich and complex experience of LatinX identity in California—with community voices leading the way.
🥁 Drumroll, please! Announcing the LatinX Coastal Story Community Selection Committee, who’ll help select the lead researcher and shape the project from the very beginning:

We may not be scientists 🤓, but we sure spend plenty of time with them! 🌿🐢

We’re meeting regularly with our design team, biologists, and regulatory agencies , and to anticipate concerns and make sure the park is applying the very best practices for habitat restoration and stewardship.

Restoring tidal marsh, expanding riparian habitat, and planting hundreds of trees 🌳 will create a healthier, more resilient riverfront for countless native species. Surveying and monitoring the site, protecting nesting areas, and safely relocating wildlife when needed are all part of the plan during construction—with wildlife corridors and ongoing stewardship helping species thrive long after the park reopens.

And we’re permitting for the whole vision from the start—so no lizards 🦎, turtles 🐢, jackrabbits 🐇, steelhead 🐟 or sturgeon are left behind!

Puede que no seamos científicos 🤓, ¡pero sí que pasamos mucho tiempo con ellos! 🌿🐢

Nos reunimos regularmente con nuestro equipo de diseño, biólogos y agencias reguladoras , y para anticiparnos a posibles inquietudes y asegurarnos de que el parque aplique las mejores prácticas para la restauración y el cuidado del hábitat.

Restaurar las marismas de marea, ampliar el hábitat ribereño y plantar cientos de árboles 🌳 ayudará a crear un entorno más saludable y resiliente a lo largo del río para innumerables especies nativas. Durante la construcción, el plan incluye inspeccionar y monitorear el sitio, proteger las áreas de anidación y trasladar de forma segura a la fauna cuando sea necesario. Y una vez que el parque vuelva a abrir, los corredores de vida silvestre y las prácticas continuas de conservación ayudarán a que estas especies sigan prosperando por muchas generaciones.

Además, estamos tramitando desde el principio los permisos para hacer realidad la visión completa del parque, ¡para que ningún lagarto 🦎, tortuga 🐢, liebre 🐇, trucha arcoíris 🐟 ni esturión se quede atrás!

Petaluma’s been in the spotlight lately as a food and leisure travel destination. Now, between awards, workshops, and conference participations, our little patch of green is serving as a model on a national stage, too! 🏆🎤

We had a full house 🙌 at the prestigious annual Greater & Greener conference in Austin, TX, where along with members of our amazing Dream Team from CMG Landscape Architecture and Kimzin Creative, and colleagues from Tempe, AZ Public Art, the River Park team shared with park peers from across the country how arts & culture can shape park design—practical tools, real talk, and why equity-centered community engagement is an absolute necessity. Go team!

Últimamente, Petaluma ha estado en el centro de atención como destino de viajes gastronómicos y de ocio. Ahora, entre premios, talleres y participaciones en conferencias, ¡nuestro pequeño rincón verde también está sirviendo de modelo en un escenario nacional! 🏆🎤

Given their fur coats and paws sensitive to hot sidewalks, the breezes and dirt paths out at the River Park make a great alternative to your regular route. 🐾🌿☀️ Grab your pooch and join us every Tuesday morning while it’s still on the cooler side for a laid-back, 1.4-mile loop through the park—wildflowers, fresh air, and sniff stops galore.

⏰ Group walks start at 8:30 am through Aug 11; back to 9 am starting Aug 18

We were so honored to receive the “Innovation Award of Excellence” from the California Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) alongside the incredible artists who helped shape our engagement process. 💫🏆 Thank you to former CPRS president Cindy Bagley for presenting the award and joining us in the celebration! 🎉
From poetry workshops to murals to hands-on exhibits, the artists invited the community to imagine what a truly welcoming park could be, and to shape that vision together. 🎨📝🌿

While Petaluma River Park Foundation is busy building a park, just as important is ongoing care for the current raw landscape and our visitors’ experience. 🌿🚶🏽

Along with partnering with Two Rock Land Management to bring in their sheep for grazing the tall grass, we’ve also given the park’s gathering area a glow-up! 😍 The shade structures got a good cleaning, plus check out brand-new bilingual signs offering a sneak peak of the future park to come! 👀🌱

🙌💪 Special shoutout to the crew of staff and volunteers involved in its installation—go Teddy Herzog and Hansgrunt!! 🎉

Nothing says summer at the River Park like welcoming back those adorable carbon-friendly vegetation managers! 🐑💚
Sheep started grazing in June and are still at it! ☀️ Catch them this week before they wrap up, compacting the tall grasses, creating natural fire barriers, chomping away, and returning organic matter into the soil. 🌱
Thanks to The City of Petaluma, CA, Sarah Keiser, Two Rock Land Management, and our neighbor Friends of the Petaluma River for this important and fun-to-watch partnership! 🤝
