It comprises approximately 35 acres of undeveloped land over two sites: on the McNear Peninsula and directly across the McNear Channel at 500 Hopper Street.

Petaluma River Park Foundation and our incredible Community Park Designers have been hard at work curating a joyful, intergenerational Spring Equinox marketplace, with sweet treats and artisanal drinks, handcrafted gift items, art, seasonal bouquets, plus face-painting, portraits, multicultural performances, and more!

It was a full house last Saturday for “Living with the Creek: Chinese Labor in Petaluma,” a moving talk by Sonoma State University’s Dr. Chingling Wo, as part of our Chinese Coastal Story project, Feet in the Mud.

Dr. Wo shared research both scholarly and deeply personal, revealing how Chinese workers helped shape Petaluma’s farms, economy, and river with specialized expertise, only to be systematically driven out by the very society they helped build.

As we imagine the future River Park, we also look honestly at the past. Whose labor shaped this place, whose stories were erased, and how do we honor them now? Dr. Wo closed by asking that we protect the people who build our communities, rather than discriminate against them.

El sábado pasado tuvimos casa llena para “Viviendo con el Arroyo: El trabajo chino en Petaluma”, una charla conmovedora de la Dra. Chingling Wo, de la Universidad Estatal de Sonoma, como parte de nuestro proyecto Chinese Coastal Story, Feet in the Mud.

La Dra. Wo compartió una investigación tanto académica como profundamente personal, revelando cómo los trabajadores chinos ayudaron a dar forma a las granjas, la economía y el río de Petaluma con conocimientos especializados, solo para ser expulsados sistemáticamente por la misma sociedad que ayudaron a construir.

Mientras imaginamos el futuro River Park, también miramos con honestidad el pasado. ¿De quién fue el trabajo que dio forma a este lugar? ¿Qué historias fueron borradas? ¿Y cómo las honramos ahora? La Dra. Wo cerró invitándonos a proteger a las personas que construyen nuestras comunidades, en lugar de discriminarlas.

Our Community Park Designers (CPDs) are the force powering our upcoming Spring by the River Market on Saturday, March 21—and wow, do they bring it.
So… who are CPDs? Glad you asked! 👀

They’re a committed, conscientious, and fun cohort of 10 community members with diverse backgrounds and a shared love for this place. They help shape the park’s design, activate joyful community programs, and champion inclusive access, making sure the River Park is truly a haven for everyone.

Thanks to their energy and care, our debut marketplace will be bursting with businesses, organizations, artists, makers, and talent from Petaluma and beyond—all in one riverside celebration you won’t want to miss! 🌿🎶🛍️
