The first scholarship for the month of September is the Dennis Curtis Scholarship.

Dennis part of the 1960’s Peru State graduate group who are fiercely loyal to the College. He was not on the football team but was an athletic trainer for the team.

Dennis still attends home football games and drops by many basketball games as well. Dennis established the scholarship to promote Peru State College to Elkhorn High School students and as a way of giving back to Peru State. Dennis credits Peru State with helping him find his love of teaching.

The Curtis scholarship goes to an incoming freshman from Elkhorn High School who has been involved in school activities.

The Bobcat marching band was revived in 1974 and flourished for several years under the direction of whom? This photo is of the 1976 band as they practiced to get ready for the 1976 fall marching season!

If you know who the band director who came in the 70's and brought the marching band back to life was, comment below!

Better yet, if you can identify any of the band members, let everyone know as the photo was not identified!

When McKenzie had left, another strong leader emerged at Peru Normal when Eliza Morgan joined Peru as preceptress. While her role included teaching literature, rhetoric and history, her greater impact might have been in shaping the college experience for the school's young women.

Morgan started by turning the sparsely decorated dormitory rooms into pleasant homes for the girls.

"When Miss Morgan took charge of the ladies' dormitory," McKenzie later wrote, "it was in a decidedly plain, not to say rough, condition. The rooms were poorly furnished."

"Her first thought was to secure at slight expense, rugs or carpet, or oilcloth for the floor."

Morgan ran a tight ship and expected her girls to care as much about their accommodations as she did! And they did!

The last scholarship to be posted for the month of August is the Ada Crooker Scholarship.

The Ada Crooker Scholarship was established in Ada’s memory by her daughters – Jane Smith and Sue Norvell.

It is awarded to an Auburn High School graduate majoring in business.

Crooker graduated from Auburn High School in 1928 and then furthered her education at Peru State College and the University of Nebraska. She worked as a legal secretary. Later, she assumed duties in her father’s real estate business and was active in the business for many years.

She was active in the Brownville Historical Society, the Nemaha Country Democratic Party, and was a long-time member of the Auburn Country Club where she served on the board and was the first woman to be elected as president of that organization.

Peru State Giving Week
Kicks Off September 1

Peru State College is preparing to embark upon its third annual Giving Week, September 1–7.

Giving Week is a celebration of the generosity, pride and sense of community that has helped sustain Peru State for 159 years, noted college President Robert L. Mock. Alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and supporters will come together to honor the College’s rich history while investing in the students and programs that will shape its future.

Donor support provides scholarships, strengthens academic programs and athletics, supports student organizations and activities, and funds projects that enhance the Peru State experience.

“Giving Week is really about celebrating everything that makes Peru State special,” Jon Firmature, executive director of the Peru State College Foundation, said. “It gives our alumni and friends an opportunity to support the areas of the College that mean the most to them while collectively making a tremendous impact on our students.”

Many Areas to Support

One thing about Giving Week is that there is something for everyone to support.

Donors can choose from a variety of academic and athletic initiatives, supporting the activities and experiences that bring energy and pride to the Campus of a Thousand Oaks.

Supporters may also give to the Blue and White Fund, which provides the PSC Foundation with flexibility to respond to emerging needs and opportunities.

Challenges and Matches

Adding excitement to Giving Week will be a growing lineup of matching gifts and giving challenges designed to inspire Bobcats everywhere to participate and make their support go even further.

Generous donors have stepped forward with opportunities to multiply the impact of gifts to designated programs, projects, and priorities. Some will match gifts dollar-for-dollar, while others will unlock additional funding when participation or fundraising goals are reached.

To date, the Foundation has secured over 20 different matches and challenges. They include the School of Professional Studies; Science program; Blue and White Fund; Cheerleading; Business Contest and Collegiate FBLA; Homecoming; Hall of Fame; School of Education Faculty Development; Dr. Seuss event; School of Education CARE program; Student Engagement and Belonging; Football; Project ROAR; Campus Beautification; Music Program; Staff Development, Volleyball, Men’s Basketball; Hicks/Anderson Student Teacher Scholarship, and Softball.

In addition, a generous alumnus is providing an overall $50,000 match, creating another incentive for alumni, friends, and supporters to participate.

Additional matches and challenges can be added before Giving Week begins September 1. Individuals, families, alumni groups, and businesses interested in sponsoring a match or challenge are encouraged to contact the Peru State College Foundation office.

A legislative appropriation of $28,000 allowed work to begin on Normal Hall in the summer of 1872. The building stood 3 1/2 stories tall, and its tower stood 90 feet above the ground - high enough for visitors to see across the river into Missouri and Iowa.

The building, which became known as "the Main Building" and later "Old Main," opened in 1875 and featured an apartment for the principal. A south wing built in 1885 added recitation rooms, a chapel, and laboratories.

The south wing was removed to make way for the current auditorium. The rest of Normal Hall was torn down in 1928 to build the current Hoyt Science Building.

The next scholarship to be noted is the Dr. J.W. Crabtree Scholarship.

The Crabtree Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Eunice Crabtree in memory of her father, Dr. J.W. Crabtree, who served as President of Peru State College from 1904 to 1910.

The scholarship goes to a fulltime student.

Crabtree, class of 1887, was the first Peru State normal graduate to head the school, the first to be primarily known as “president” and the first to be clean-shaven. Construction projects taken on during his tenure are still standing today.

He later served as Nebraska’s state superintendent of public instruction and as president of Wisconsin State Normal at River Falls, which has a dormitory named in his honor.

Crabtree was executive secretary of the National Education Association from 1917 to 1934 and was highly regarded for keeping the group together during a period of conflict between teachers and administrators. Upon his death in 1945, the editor of the National Education Association Journal called him “a great leader, a combination of Horace Mann and Abraham Lincoln.”
