Twenty-one years ago this month, an anonymous donor gave $100.00 for a prize to be given in Devon’s name to a student at the Peru Elementary School. I presented the award at eighth grade graduation, and a few days later, on June 17th, Devon succumbed to cancer. In her obituary, we asked that, instead of flowers, folks donate money towards perpetuating this prize in Devon’s name. The response wildly exceeded our expectations, and today the growth of our resulting nonprofit fund allows us to award the original prize, which has risen to $300, as well as an annual $4,500 scholarship to a Peru citizen of any age pursuing further education. That scholarship has usually gone to Dirigo seniors, this year I’m pleased to say it was awarded to recent Mountain Valley graduate, Zack Putnam.
​But Katie, and I are here to present the 2024 Devon Waugh Memorial Fund. The criteria for it describes the kind of person Devon was. The recipient for this award is selected by the Dirigo High School faculty and goes to a Peruvian in the senior class who best exemplifies the qualities of honesty, personal integrity, and compassion for others.
​It gives me great pleasure to announce that this year’s Devon Waugh memorial award, along with a check for $300, goes to Carson Redmond.

We are beyond grateful and blessed to have this opportunity to support Zachary as he embarks on his second year journey in the medical field. We got to hand over this incredible award in person this afternoon. Norman and I had the pleasure of delivering the news while she was at work.
