Today is International Day of Charity.

It’s a big name for something that looks pretty ordinary around here. A pantry that runs every Monday because somebody stocks it. A clinic that sees people at 5 p.m. because a doctor decided to. A canoe that got built because adults kept showing up on for seven months.

Charity at the Heights isn’t an event. It’s whoever walked in the door and stayed.

If you want in, there are three ways:
• Volunteer. Call us and we’ll find you something.
• Buy raffle tickets for the canoe the kids built. 1 for $2, 3 for $5, 7 for $10, 15 for $20.
• Tell somebody who needs the pantry or the clinic that we’re here. That one’s free and it matters more than you’d think.

Thank you to every person who has given this place time, money, or a Saturday. You are the reason there’s anything to write about.

The sky won yesterday. The canoe did not.

Jill and Shelly hauled it out to the Farmer’s Market to sell raffle tickets and got rained out before the morning was over. They stood there anyway, right up until the clouds made the decision for them.

Worth saying out loud: kids built that boat. They started in February and worked on it for seven months, and what you see on that stand is the result.

Friendly Reminder To Stop Out Tomorrow!!

This Friday, the American Red Cross is setting up in our Auxiliary Gym.

Noon to 5:00 p.m., September 4. It takes about an hour, most of which is sitting in a chair. September is one of the tightest months of the year for the blood supply, and this drive is happening in your neighborhood.

Schedule at RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows, but scheduling means you're not standing around.
