The recent launch of the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional International Exchanges Caucus highlights the growing recognition of how important international exchange programs are to diplomacy, innovation, workforce development, and stronger local communities.

As a recipient of the Open World Program administered by the Congressional Office for International Leadership (COIL), an agency of the United States Congress, we are honored to be part of an initiative that promotes global collaboration, professional exchange, and the sharing of best practices across borders.

These programs create meaningful people-to-people connections while also bringing value back to our own communities through new ideas, partnerships, and perspectives that can help address shared challenges locally and globally.

In times of uncertainty, continued investment in international exchange and public diplomacy remains more important than ever.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representatives Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA-06) and Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ-02), alongside U.S. Senators John Boozman (R-AR) and Cory Booker (D-NJ), announced the launch of the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional International Exchanges Caucus. The members are launching this cau...

For more than 1,553 days, Ukrainians have faced daily air raids, destroyed homes, shortages of medical supplies, and unimaginable uncertainty. You can help. 💙💛

Toledo Helps Ukraine has launched its sixth humanitarian collection drive through its Surplus to Survival initiative, running now through July 5, 2026.

Donations accepted Sundays from 8 a.m.–Noon
Lutheran Church of the Master
28744 Simmons Road, Perrysburg, OH
Large donations can be scheduled for pickup by emailing [email protected].
The need is especially urgent as more than 1,600 hospitals in Ukraine have been damaged or destroyed. At the same time, usable supplies here in the U.S. often go to waste. This initiative helps save lives in Ukraine while reducing landfill waste here at home.
Financial donations are also needed to help cover shipping costs, which range from $6,000–$9,000 per shipment.

• Tarps, tents & sleeping bags

Alona Matchenko, an attorney and founder of Toledo Helps Ukraine, said she has recently tried to center recycling concepts into her organization.

“We have a project called From Surplus to Survival,” Ms. Matchenko said. “It is where we contact local police departments or sheriffs offices and we collect decommissioned uniforms. We send it to Ukraine and it is repurposed on the battlefield.”

She describes this as a small correlation to the scrap metal industry Mr. Golding works in but said it is yet another example that “recycling works.”

Tarps are one thing that Ms. Matchenko collects a lot of as they can be used in Ukraine to cover ruined buildings.

“Not only does it work, it saves lives,” Ms. Matchenko said of recycling.
