Did you know that the Duck Pond is owned by the American Legion?

For generations, the Duck Pond has been a cherished part of our community: a place where families gather, children feed the ducks, and residents enjoy a quick lunch break. While many know it as the “Jaycee’s Duck Pond,” few realize that approximately 75% of the property is owned and maintained by the American Legion, which has worked to preserve this special landmark for the benefit of our community.

We kindly ask that if you use our park, please respect it. Clean up after yourself, don’t maliciously damage anything, and don’t harass the animals.

We are proud to announce the launch of the Taylor County Memorial American Legion Post 96 Auxiliary and invite all eligible individuals to become part of this important organization dedicated to serving our veterans, military members, their families, and our community.

The American Legion Auxiliary is one of the nation's largest patriotic service organizations, supporting the mission of The American Legion through volunteerism, advocacy, youth programs, and community service.

Membership is open to grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct or adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion, as well as female descendants of veterans who served honorably during periods of war or conflict recognized by The American Legion.

If you are interested in learning more about the Auxiliary and how you can get involved, we encourage you to attend our interest meeting on Saturday, June 13th, immediately following the Post's annual Flag Retirement Ceremony.

This is a great opportunity to ask questions, meet fellow community members, and help establish a strong Auxiliary presence that will support veterans and their families throughout Taylor County.

For additional information, please send us a message through our page.

I would like to take a moment to shout out one of our newest members, Luke Murdock! Although he has only been with us a short time, he has spearheaded several projects around the post! He was instrumental in the rebuilding of our wheelchair ramp, he has repainted most of the building, helped lead the Veterans Memorial Park cleanup, and can be seen below replacing our sign that was wiped out by a drunk driver. Luke is an asset to our post and a valued member of our team!

On May 16th, American Legion Post 96 members hosted a Veterans Memorial Park cleaning event in preparation for the Memorial Day ceremony. Legionaries, alongside a group of valued volunteers, touched up the landscape from the previous clean up and addressed areas that were not reached last time. As we were tending to the park, we were able to watch as the Taylor County Veterans Memorial Park committee replaced the eagle topper on the flag pole which was damaged during the hurricanes.

Post members also placed American flags at the gravesites of fallen veterans in the Woodlawn Cemetery, as we do twice a year. These flags will remain standing for approximately 2 weeks to honor their service and sacrifice.

Thank you, Duke Energy. Scott Mixon from Duke stopped by to present a $7,000 check to kick off Phase II of the Board of Directors' plans to expand the park with an area for two additional block wall monuments. We are proud to be an America250 grant recipient of $5,000 as well as $2,000 from their community fund. Also planned at the park are additions of the US Space Force flag and seal in appropriate areas of the park. If you are a Taylor County veteran and would like your name added to the next wall, or if you'd like to add a qualifying veteran, navigate to TCVMP.com to grab a block application and find out more.

Pictured here are board members Mark Wiggins, Dana Southerland, Scott Mixon (Duke Energy), Roy Grubbs, Jamie Sheffield, and Mike Hunter. Board members not present are Greg Parker, Shawna Beach, Tim Cook, and Wanda Thompson. See you at the park for the Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 25th at 10am.
