Hearts For Hometown Dogs

Hearts For Hometown Dogs Saving hometown shelter dogs through rescue coordination, transport and fundraising, to move them as quickly as possible to rescue or a loving home.

Our passion and love for dogs, especially ones in our hometown sparked an idea…and idea that led to a dream and a dream that is now becoming a reality. Hearts For Hometown Dogs was founded when a need for sponsorship and rescue coordination was noticed in our hometown shelter. We founded HFHD to promote awareness of homeless dogs in Taylor County, to help coordinate their rescue or adoption and to

fundraise to help alleviate the financial burden incurred by rescues that help save their lives. Taylor County has a major heart worm issue with the majority of the dogs coming to the shelter needing the costly treatment in order to live a healthy life. This cost is several hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars. This limits how many of our dogs rescues can save. We are working toward the goal of having sponsorship for any dog from our hometown shelter needing rescue, so that no dog is left behind.

We are incredibly honored and grateful to share that our organization recently received a generous donation from Mr. Rod and Mrs. Shelia Baumgardner who believed deeply in helping animals in our community.

Their thoughtful legacy will allow us to continue providing low-cost spay and neuter services for pets whose families may not otherwise be able to afford it. Because of their kindness, countless dogs and cats will live healthier lives, and many litters of unwanted animals will be prevented for years to come.

This remarkable act of compassion will have a lasting impact on pets and the people who love them throughout our community. While we mourn their passing, we celebrate the difference they chose to make. Their legacy will live on in every pet helped through this gift.

From all of us, and from the many animals whose lives will be changed because of this generosity — thank you. 💙🐾

*WARNING: Graphic photos!*

5 weeks ago, our volunteers were made aware of a dog with an embedded collar living around a gas station.

They worked tirelessly for 5 weeks to trap this poor dog so he could get help.

Thankfully he was humanely trapped on Saturday, and our amazing friends at Perry Animal Hospital were able to remove the embedded collar, clean up the wounds, and provide cold laser therapy to get his healing journey started.

Unfortunately, this was a collar that had been on for quite a long time, as there were old wounds showing where it had previously healed over.

It is important to keep a collar on your pet for identification, but please be sure that it is not too small or too tight. These injuries are extremely painful and can lead to serious infections and sepsis.

Thank you so much for your support and generosity! Without you, we would not be able to help the animals in need!

COPIED FROM LUCKY PUP RESCUE SC………..“Whenever you feel guilty about not giving your dog the best life, whenever you feel like you are working too late while your dog is at home, whenever you think about surrendering your dog because you “can’t give them the life they deserve”, just look at this picture of kennel manager Trevor Denham and the team at The City of Mobile Animal Services getting ready for dinner time. You can see one dog with his paw out waiting for his food.

For these dogs locked in their kennels, this is the highlight of their day, they have absolutely nothing.

Your dog would much prefer being on your sofa waiting for you to come home, rather than being stuck in here, I promise you are doing just fine.
Keep them home where they belong.”

FDLE launched the statewide animal cruelty database on Jan. 1, 2026 which lists individuals who have been convicted of felony animal cruelty. This data is available to the public to search and view. We will be utilizing it here when processing adoption applications and foster applications as an added step to help ensure animals are not put into homes of those known to cause them harm. It is highly recommended that if you are rehoming an animal, you take a moment to look at it before giving your pet to someone you do not know.

Merry Christmas from HFHD! We hope you and your family enjoy one another in this season of GIVING!

We are incredibly grateful for the GIFT of partnerships, donors, grants, volunteers and our community that has allowed us to spay and neuter 279 cats + 40 dogs this year!! Another 100 opportunities are available through a generous grant we received to reach even more too!!

We have always known since the initiation of HFHD that spay and neuter was the only way to truly make a difference, and we are so proud to be part of this movement in our hometown!

We look forward to helping even more pets moving forward!

Merry Christmas,
HFHD

Today is GivingTuesday, where people around the world come together to donate to the local organizations they love and support. Hearts For Hometown Dogs has been able to do so much for the animals of Taylor County...because of YOU!

This year, our goal is to raise $2,000. We have been focusing on low-cost spay/neuter this year, and by reaching this goal, we will be able to spay/neuter 60 dogs and cats!

That is a huge number of unwanted litters born, which decreases the number of animals that end up in shelters every year.

We are deeply grateful for our friends, supporters, and community who have all come together over the years to help us continue our mission of saving lives!

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts ❤️
