It’s always a good time when Perry Elementary comes to visit the McCreary Community Building! 🏊

The energy these kids bring is unmatched—whether they’re splashing in the pool, shooting hoops 🏀, kicking the soccer ball ⚽, spiking volleyballs 🏐, tossing the football 🏈, exploring the gym, or just having fun in the building.

We love watching them light up the place and get excited about everything the rec center has to offer.

Thanks for spending time with us today! You’re always welcome back.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT | Mike Thomason saved a small cat today at Willis and 3rd.
Quick shout-out to our maintenance man for looking out for the little ones in town. Way to go, Mike. Please message us if you’re missing this little kitten.

Please help us give a shout-out to Mike Thomason, our Maintenance Man. He’s been here 1.25 years (or, as he puts it, forever).

Mike’s favorite part of the job is sleuthing out the issue and coming up with a solution — and being creative on new projects. Something people may not know: he’s handy across plumbing, electrical, woodworking, cabinetry, flooring, refinishing, construction, and automotive work.

He’s not usually running the programs himself, but he supports the people in charge so things go smoothly.

Fun fact: Mike has a past life as a paramedic and death investigator, on top of all those hands-on skills.

Outside of work, you’ll find him hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking, and hiking.

Thank you, Mike, for keeping things running and for the creative fixes you bring to the building. We’re glad you’re on the team.

🚧 Bridge Installation Update – Bridge #1 is Going In! 🌉

Great news for Pattee Park! Crews are installing the first of the new pedestrian bridges over Frog Creek as part of the ongoing park improvements.

These new bridges will make the trails more accessible, safer, and easier to enjoy for walkers, families, and everyone who loves getting out in the park. The project is supported by an Iowa DNR REAP grant and builds on the recent Frog Creek restoration work.

We’ll share more photos and updates as Bridge #2 progresses. In the meantime, please follow all posted signs and stay clear of the active work area for everyone’s safety.

Thanks for your patience as we continue investing in Perry’s parks!

💙 Building Safer Communities, Together 💙

This week, our McCreary Community Building staff had the pleasure of training with Officer Jordan Berry of the Perry Iowa Police Department on de-escalation techniques. Officer Berry shared practical tools for calming tense situations, communicating with empathy, and keeping everyone safe, and our team walked away better prepared to serve you.

This training is a great example of the partnership between Parks & Recreation and the Perry Police Department. When our departments work together, we create spaces where everyone feels safe, respected, and welcome.

That matters most for our youth. Every day, kids and teens walk through our doors looking for a place to play, learn, and belong. By modeling patience, respect, and calm problem-solving, our staff can help give them the tools and mindset they need to grow into confident, capable leaders of the future.

But McCreary isn't just for kids. From toddlers to seniors, our rec center is a place for people of all ages to stay active, connect with neighbors, and build community. A safe rec center means a stronger Perry for everyone.

Thank you, Officer Berry and the Perry Police Department, for investing in our team and our community! 🙌
