The Charlie & Rubye Newberry Scholarship is a foundation created to provide financial assistance to a deserving African American Female and African American Male from Perry High School.

We are so excited to continue our family legacy and elated to be able to assist young deserving African Americans fulfill their dream of going to college!

Since 2020, the children and grandchildren of Charlie and Rubye Newberry have provided an annual scholarship to a deserving African American Female and African American Male from Perry High School.

Charlie and Rubye Newberry contributed enormously to their community and many people benefited greatly.

We are now accepting applications for the 2026 scholarship. Please note the deadline is April 1, 2026.

Details about the scholarship:
Students must be African American.
Students must be a Senior at Perry High School.
Students must have a 2.5 GPA or higher.
Students will attend a 2 or 4 year college.
Students must complete the application in its entirety. Please see application instructions.
Two scholarships will be awarded each year to an African American Female and Male.

The deadline for submitting the application and other documents is April 1, 2026.

Congratulations to our 2025 Newberry Scholarship recipients, Jordyn Doughty and Destint Little!

Our 2025 Newberry Scholarship recipients Jordan and Destint are graduating from Perry High School.

Destint Little is the daughter of Diabeta Stokes. While enrolled at Perry High School, she participated in the following extracurricular activities: Future Business Leaders of America (2019-2025), National Beta Club (2022-2025), National Honor Society (2022-2025), and Perry Public Library Youth Ambassador (2021-2022).

Destint volunteered as a tutor for the Perry Housing After School Care Program. As a volunteer, she mentored younger students showcasing her commitment to learning and helping others. Destint continues to dedicate her time to working with younger students by attending their cheer competitions, basketball games, etc. She finds that the positive impact she has had on her mentees is incredibly rewarding.

Jordan Doughty is the daughter of Danielle Jackson. During her time at Perry High School, Jordan participated in JROTC (2021-2024) and Teen Talk Volunteering (2022-2024). Serving as an ROTC cadet helped Jordan strengthen her leadership skills and sense of responsibility. She now understands that leadership is about empowering others and leading by example.

The Newberry Scholarship Committee would like to recognize Destint Little and Jordan Doughty for their hard work and dedication. We truly believe that they will achieve great things and continue to uplift the African American community. Therefore, we are awarding a scholarship for college expenses.

The Charlie & Rubye Newberry Scholarship is a scholarship offered annually to provide financial assistance to deserving African American students from Perry High School. Our goal is to encourage our scholarship recipients to extend their education beyond high school.

We believe that hard work, dedication and helping others are the keys to success. We are committed to honoring the legacy of Charlie & Rubye Newberry and elevating the African American Community by supporting deserving students with a scholarship to attend the college or university of their dreams.

Our 2024 Newberry Scholarship recipient is Ciara Cameron. Ciara Cameron is graduating from Perry High School. We especially want to acknowledge that Ciara began high school in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. Therefore, it is incredible that she completed her coursework during those challenging times and was able to graduate in four years.

Ciara is the daughter of Valerie Cameron and William Cameron. While enrolled at Perry High, she participated in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Cheer, Piano as well as Photography club and Reading club. Ciara will be attending Fort Valley State University and majoring in Nursing.

Ciara has overcome many obstacles in this challenging world and persevered to become a confident young woman. Ciara plans to give back by serving the kids of her community. She wants them to understand and realize that they are beautiful and courageous just the way they are!

Congratulations to Nyjaya Cooper, our 2023 Newberry Scholarship recipient! Nyjaya Cooper is a graduate from Perry High School where she completed Honors courses. She plans to attend Kennesaw State University. Nyjaya is the daughter of Delushundra Thomas and Jason Cooper Sr.

While attending Perry High School, Nyjaya volunteered at Summer Hill Nursing Home where she earned her Certified Nursing Assistant certification. She also donated clothing and food to Goodwill and The Salvation Army. In her scholarship essay, Nyjaya said these touching words; “Kindness is an act of love and everyone in our society deserves some.”

The Newberry Scholarship Committee recognizes Nyjaya’s hard work and dedication. We truly believe that she will achieve great things and continue to uplift the African American community. Therefore, we are awarding Nyjaya $500 to use towards her college expenses.

Congratulations to Vakaya Lee, our 2022 Newberry Scholarship recipient! Vakaya Lee is graduating from Perry High School as an AP Scholar with Honors. She plans to attend Tulane University and major in Biology with a pre-med focus. Vakaya is the daughter of Valerie Clark-Lee and Gerald Lee.

While attending Perry High School, Vakaya was a member of the National Honor Society, BETA Club, and Academic Bowl. She is a recipient of the Panther P.R.I.D.E. Award due to her contribution to creating a positive environment in the classroom. Furthermore, she was named Wendy’s Student Athlete of the Year as a varsity basketball player.

The Newberry Scholarship Committees recognizes Vakaya’s hard work and dedication. We truly believe that she will achieve great things and continue to uplift the African American community. Hence, we are awarding Vakaya $500 to use toward her college expenses.

In 2020, the children of Charlie & Rubye Newberry created The Newberry Scholarship. The foundation provides financial assistance to a deserving African American Female and African American Male from Perry High School. The goal is to encourage both to continue their education beyond high school.

The first recipients of the Charlie and Rubye Newberry Scholarship were Kayla Burnham and Quah’Ja Bullard. Kayla Burnham graduated with Honors from Perry High School in 2020. She is attending Albany State University and majoring in Nursing. She is the daughter of Katina Williams and Lorenzo Burnham. Kayla received $500 to use toward her college expenses.

Quah’Ja Bullard graduated with Honors from Perry High School in 2020. He is attending Georgia Southern University and majoring in Psychology. He is the son of La’Kenya Bullard and Quarius Bullard Sr. Quah’Ja received $500 for college expenses.

Our 2021 Newberry Scholarship recipient is Michelle Brooks. Michelle Brooks is graduating with Honors and plans to attend Central Georgia Technical College. She is the daughter of Ralph and Pamela Brooks. Michelle will receive $500 for college expenses.

The Newberry Scholarship believes that hard work, dedication and helping others are the keys to success. We are dedicated to honoring the legacy of Charlie & Rubye Newberry and elevating the African American Community by supporting deserving students with a scholarship to attend the college or university of their dreams.
