Yesterday was an intense day for your Troop K Troopers. This was the first tornado of the day that was heading straight for Braman, Peckham and Newkirk. Lucky it just missed all three towns with minimal damage. Many people are still without power.

Our Troop J partners to the West were not so lucky. The city of Enid was hit hard by a devastating EF3 tornado near Vance Airforce Base. Please pray for the families, Troopers and other first responders involved in rescue efforts. We ask everyone stay away from the area so that crews can work.

If anyone has information and/or video, please contact us at the number listed below. We know that Troop K is far away from the Oklahoma City metro area. But I-35 is heavily traveled. Someone might have something.

OHP investigators are seeking additional information from the public in regard to yesterday’s fatal crash.

They’re specifically looking for anyone driving either north or southbound on I-35 near Hefner Road in Oklahoma City yesterday between the times of 11:15 am and 11:30 am who has dash camera.

If you have any video that fits this criteria, please call the OHP Central Communications Center at 405-425-2323.

It is with deep sorrow the Oklahoma Highway Patrol announces the line of duty death of Trooper Vernon Brake.

On April 8, 2026, at 11:27 a.m., a vehicle traveling southbound on I-35 lost control for an unknown reason and crossed the center cable barrier. The vehicle struck Trooper Brake, who was traveling in the northbound lanes just south of Hefner Road in Oklahoma City.

Trooper Brake was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the other involved vehicle, along with a four-year-old passenger, were also pronounced deceased at the scene.

Trooper Brake was a graduate of the 56th OHP Academy in 2006 and has proudly served the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for nearly 20 years, with a significant amount of time assigned to Troop S (commercial motor vehicle enforcement). After his graduation from the academy, he also served in Oklahoma and Logan Counties.

Trooper Brake is survived by his wife and two children.

Our prayers and deepest sympathies are with his family as well as the family of the other driver involved.

OHP's Traffic Homicide Unit (THU) is conducting the investigation into the crash.

OKLAHOMA! We want you to be as prepared as possible for the upcoming winter storm. We have canceled days off for troopers so more will be out to assist. We are also partnering with Oklahoma National Guard to have SMART teams ready to go in Woodward, Weatherford, Ardmore, Vinita, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Durant. These teams stand ready to rescue stranded motorists and move vehicles off the roadway.
