The Grey Snow Eagle House rehabilitates injured Bald and Golden Eagles under the USFWS rehabilitation and religious use permits. For the eagles that cannot be released back into the wild and have quality of life, we have built numerous types of caging to be able to allow these birds a place to live out their life in peace. The aviary was started in 2006 and has been funded by two Tribal Wildlife Grants (USFWS) as well as the generous annual funds of the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. Finally, to aid in the conservation of wild eagles we have a partnership with Oklahoma State University to look at the genetic variation in wild Bald and Golden Eagles.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day from the Grey Snow Eagle House!

To celebrate today, we want to honor our indigenous roots and talk about what it means to be a USFWS Native Aviary. For those who are new, the Grey Snow Eagle House was started by the late Victor Roubidoux, elder and veteran of the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. We are also fully funded and supported by the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. As a tribal facility, we provide a unique perspective on caring for these sacred birds and eagle conservation.

With a USFWS Native Aviary permit, we can provide life-long care for eagles that have been permanently injured and cannot return to the wild. We make sure every bird is given individualized care to ensure that they have quality of life while in captivity. Individuals are provided with large rock pools to bathe in, fresh food, and daily enrichment activities. We care for eagles from all over the United States (including areas such as Oklahoma, Arkansas, Michigan, Nebraska, Colorado, Oregon, and Wisconsin to name a few). With 50 permanent residents, we are the largest of the seven tribal aviaries in the United States.
Here’s to over 20 years of saving eagles and hopefully 60 releases at the end of the year!

Just a quick update on Fall Frights. We have sold about half of the tickets available. Once we sell out there will not be anymore tickets available to ensure we have a manageable number of guests for the event! We are so excited to see everyone in two weeks!

Happy Migratory Bird Day! You may have noticed some birds that have been around for the summer have disappeared, like the Mississippi Kite and Ruby-throated Hummingbird. There may also be some new birds at your feeder for the winter, like Dark-eyed Juncos and Purple Finches. That is because it is time for fall migration! During this time, millions of birds of more than 350 different species will be migrating through the US, primarily overnight, with some traveling thousands of miles! A great way you can help scientists have a better understanding of migration patterns is to participate in citizen science! By simply using an app, such as eBird, to submit a list of birds you have seen in your area, you are providing crucial data that can help track populations and contribute to conservation efforts!

Did you know that eagles and other bird species can get cataracts just like us? If you look closely at this individual's pupil, you can see the grey area where the cataracts are. This is an older individual that has other issues and therefore is in our non-releasable population but it is something that we look for during our exams!

Ann, our red-tailed hawk ambassador, is practicing her self crating as she is ready to see you at Fall Frights!

Our ambassadors are always given the choice to participate in outreach education events. By allowing them the opportunity to self crate, we are also giving them the ability to say no to doing the outreach event for the day. This in turn gives us empowered ambassadors that know we put their wants first!
