The Grey Snow Eagle House rehabilitates injured Bald and Golden Eagles under the USFWS rehabilitation and religious use permits. For the eagles that cannot be released back into the wild and have quality of life, we have built numerous types of caging to be able to allow these birds a place to live out their life in peace. The aviary was started in 2006 and has been funded by two Tribal Wildlife G

rants (USFWS) as well as the generous annual funds of the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. Finally, to aid in the conservation of wild eagles we have a partnership with Oklahoma State University to look at the genetic variation in wild Bald and Golden Eagles.

A common question we get during tours is why are Bald Eagles called “bald” when they have feathers on their heads? The old English word, balde, meant “white” or “white-headed,” so the word bald originally referred to their white head rather than being hairless! Their scientific name, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, also translates to white-headed sea eagle!

Another week and another release ( #58)! We were able to release 26-7 back into the wild today in the Crescent, OK area....

Another week and another release ( #58)! We were able to release 26-7 back into the wild today in the Crescent, OK area. You might remember this case from a shared post earlier this year where an eagle was brought into OSU Veterinary Medical Hospital by a local game warden and was then transferred to us for supportive care and flight conditioning.

This individual was found on the side of the road suffering from two fractures in its ulna. After a little over a month in our ICU, we were able to allow it to progress through our rehabilitation and flight conditioning cages where it passed the criteria to be released! Today, 26-7 took a long flight around the field where it was released and then flew straight up to perch in a tree to get its bearings.

Each of our rehabilitation cases has a unique story made up of caring individuals. We are so thankful to the game warden that drove the eagle to OSU, the OSU team for making this case easy on us by doing the preliminary diagnosis and work up, and the private landowner that graciously let us use his land this morning so that the eagle could be released within a few miles of where it was found.

We celebrated our 57th release in Nash, OK today. Individual 26-9 was found by Game Warden Marshall Reigh in May on the side of the road. The eagle was suffering from a mid-shaft ulnar break in one wing and a distal ulnar break in the other, so we had to worry about two different breaks in two different wings. Luckily, the breaks were quiet and after more than a month in ICU, the eagle was able to move out into a small cage where it could safely start stretching its wings. In early July, the eagle moved on to our 150ft long flight enclosure where it was able to start strengthening its flight muscles, working on its stamina, and passing the criteria needed for release. Today, Marshal was able to open its crate in the area it was found due to the generosity of the Groendyke family who opened up their property for the private release.

We are so happy to see this eagle back in the wild and are thankful to the people that made it happen. It truly takes a village of generous people who take the time to care about eagles to allow us to do what we do.
