Buck's legacy of bridging cultures and changing lives through humanitarian work, intercultural and educational programs, and preservation of the Pearl S. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Literature for her novel, The Good Earth, and the Nobel Prize in Literature for her body of work. Buck used the spotlight on her to shine a light on the plight of marginalized people everywhere and to advocate for the civil rights movement in the U.S. She also founded Welcome House (the world’s first international biracial adoption agency) and established The Pearl S. Buck Foundation (now Pearl S. Buck International) to provide international humanitarian aid. Buck’s groundbreaking words and work paved the way for greater international and intercultural understanding. They also provided life-changing aid for countless impoverished children. Join us this weekend for our next monthly educational nature program at Green Hills Farm Arboretum at Pearl S. Buck International - "I Spy A Mushroom" on Saturday, October 17 at 10:30 am. Join mushroom expert and hunter Luke Smithson and learn to identify, understand types, and discover where to find mushrooms. This event will include both a lecture and field experience; after the "classroom" part of the event, participants will walk the arboretum with our expert presenter and search for mushrooms. The program is rain or shine and appropriate footwear for walking outdoors is recommended. Make a difference as a Pearl S. Buck International volunteer! Volunteers serve in a variety of roles such as docents and facilitators, who lead guided tours of the Pearl S. Buck House; clerks, who staff the International Gift Shop; and event organizers for things such as the holiday season Juried Craft Show and bingo events. Attend an orientation to learn more about the opportunities available and benefits of becoming a volunteer at Pearl S. Buck International.
