About Kristy Ann Valent Pordon

Kristy was a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt, wife and friend. Kristy grew up in Pequannock, NJ and was the youngest of five children, and the only girl. Halloween was her favorite holiday, and on that date, in 2009, she married the love of her life. Kristy was a true family girl, offering loving support and advice to her nieces and nephews, and spending time with

her parents and brothers whenever she could. After graduating from Pequannock Township high school, Kristy was awarded a scholarship through the American Legion that allowed her to pay for her books at Berkeley College where she received her associate's degree. She was an avid reader and had a knack for writing short stories. In her spare time, Kristy took creative writing classes specializing in writing children's stories and had hopes of getting one of her stories published. It was, of course, a happy Halloween story for kids. The moral of the story was to be true to yourself, something that Kristy was an expert on. Kristy believed in the power of positive thinking and always did her best to look at the positive side of life. It is because of her positive outlook on life and kindness and compassion for others that we have chosen an annual scholarship for local students to honor her memory.

It was an honor to present the last official Kristy Fund Scholarship tonight, on what would have been Kristy’s 46th birthday.

We are beyond grateful to our community for your generosity over the last 14 years.

Whether the support came from Skelamingos, Face Painting at the Hoedown, Murder Mystery Dinners, Easter Eggs, swag, volunteering, or spreading the word, we have been able to give over $33,000 back to our community in Kristy’s name, and I know she is proud of her hometown for what you have all done in her memory.

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for helping us to keep her name and memory alive in PTHS for the last 13 years.

Happy Fall everyone! As our favorite holiday approaches, the Kristy Valent Pordon Scholarship Fund is making our spooky Slekamingos available for donation/purchase. As some of you know, starting in 2020 we suspended our Skelamingo fundraising activities out of an abundance of caution for our volunteers and supporters. Recommended donation is $5 per bird, bulk discounts are available, and we will deliver in town.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.

So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.
