The Society for Integrative Oncology is a non-profit, multidisciplinary organization established in 2003 to advance evidence-based, comprehensive, integrative healthcare to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. The Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary organization founded in 2003 for health professionals committed to the study and application of comp

lementary therapies and botanicals for cancer patients. It provides a convenient forum for presentation, discussion and peer review of evidence-based research and treatment modalities in the discipline known as integrative medicine. It makes a clear distinction between "alternative" or unproven and "complementary" or tested useful therapies in cancer care.Integrative oncology is a seamless rapprochement of interventions that benefit cancer patients. Because a constantly growing number of cancer patients throughout the world turn to both alternative and complementary therapies as part of their cancer treatment plan, it is essential that oncologists have ready access to information about research, existing treatment programs, and both the benefits and dangers of the wide range of complementary therapies available today. New Research Highlight from the SIO Research Committee

Integrative oncology programs are built on the promise of meeting patients where they are — but a new pragmatic trial suggests young adults with cancer may need a different approach entirely.

Published in Medical Oncology, this study followed cancer patients referred to a real-world integrative oncology service and compared outcomes between younger adults (18–45) and older patients. The twist? Young adults were just as open and easy to engage with — but showed less improvement in quality-of-life outcomes over time.

The likely culprit isn't receptivity. It's adherence. Competing life priorities, ambiguity around caregiver support, and the practical burden of weekly visits all make it harder for younger patients to stay engaged — even when they want the care.

💡 Takeaway: "Are they willing?" and "Can they sustain it?" are two different questions. Programs serving AYA (adolescent and young adult) patients may need tailored outcome measures and more flexible delivery — including telehealth — to close this gap.
