Crosswalk Safety Tips from Wisconsin DOT:

Driver responsibilities:
-Drivers must yield or stop to avoid a collision in all circumstances.
-Drivers must yield or stop for a person or device in a crosswalk and cannot pass another vehicle that has stopped at the crosswalk.
NOTE: A person is in a crosswalk when they have left the curb and are in the gutter/pan or have entered the roadway.
-Drivers turning at a traffic sign or signal must yield to people or devices legally in a crosswalk over which the driver intends to travel.
-Drivers must yield to people or devices on a sidewalk before crossing the sidewalk.
-Drivers have those same responsibilities at crosswalks for shared use paths.

Crosswalk user responsibilities:
-A person should avoid entering a crosswalk if a vehicle is so close that it will be difficult for the driver to yield.
-When crossing at an intersection with a traffic signal:
-Only cross when the “walk” signal is on.
-Continue crossing to the sidewalk or refuge island if the signal switches to “don’t walk.”
-Do not begin crossing on a “don’t walk” signal.
-Only cross when facing a green light if there is no “walk / don’t walk” signal.
-Crosswalk users crossing the street from a shared path follow the same rules as a crossing at any other crosswalk at an intersection.
-Bicyclists using a shared use path with signs or signals must obey any signs or signals before crossing a sidewalk or entering the street if there is no sidewalk. Then a bicyclist is to use the crosswalk the same way they would use any other crosswalk.
If crossing at a location other than a crosswalk, a person must yield to motor vehicles.

Nationwide, approximately 71,600 pedestrians are injured and more than 7,000 are killed in traffic crashes annually. While the majority of these pedestrian fatalities occur away from crosswalks, intersection and crosswalk-related crashes still account for about 18% of pedestrian traffic deaths.

At Highway 35 and Prairie St crossings you’ll find push button advocated cautions lights for traffic to be alert of pedestrians. Pedestrians, be sure to look both ways before crossing, even after initiating caution lights.

We continue to partner today and tomorrow with Pepin Police Department for crosswalk safety and awareness. Stop for pedestrians and Fill the Boot as we raise $$ for new turnout gear.

If you saw us out today during our boot drive and helping people cross the street safely with the crosswalk pedestrian buttons and thought to yourself, why?

Why is the fire department raising money for new turnout gear?

The answer is this: A full set of structural firefighter turnout gear (coat and pants) costs between (on average) $3,000-$5,000.
Most of our gear is nearing its approved 10 year manufacturer date. After 10 years it’s still usable but no longer considered optimal for the job. To be safe in the event we are needed, replacing this gear is necessary. And while we’ve applied and continue to apply for grants, outfitting 10 additional firefighters is very expensive.

Last year we were fortunate to be able to purchase a brand new set for our very tall firefighter D. Greenfield as we didn’t have any gear to fit someone 6’3”.

Take a look at what the future Turnout Gear of Pepin Fire looks like! This is what your donations are assisting with!

While you’re stopped for pedestrians in the crosswalk, we’re running a Fill The Boot Drive to raise $ for new turnout gear.

As we begin the long weekend, the last day of school, the unofficial start of summer… let us take a moment to remember what this weekend is truly meant to honor, to memorialize.

To those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Please join us in Congratulating Captain Ginny Pawlak for both Fire 1 State Certification on Saturday 5/16 and she graduates from CVTC with an AAS Paramedic Technician Degree tonight.

While she still has a month of internship and testing and of course the NREMT-P exam to sit for, we are beyond proud of all she has accomplished!
