Did you know?

Peoria firefighters do much more than fight fires. In addition to responding to fires and medical emergencies, our members are specially trained to serve on a variety of specialty teams that help protect our community during complex emergencies.

While the Peoria Fire Department has many specialized assignments and capabilities, three of our primary specialty teams are:

🔹 Dive Team – Trained to perform water rescues, recovery operations, and underwater searches in rivers, lakes, and other waterways.

🔹 Technical Rescue Team (TRT) – Responds to incidents involving confined spaces, trench collapses, high-angle rope rescues, structural collapse situations, and other challenging rescue scenarios.

🔹 Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Team – Trained to identify, contain, and mitigate incidents involving hazardous chemicals, fuel spills, and other dangerous substances that pose risks to people and the environment.

These teams require extensive training and ongoing education to maintain the skills necessary to respond safely and effectively when specialized emergencies occur.

From the Illinois River to hazardous material incidents and complex rescue situations, Peoria firefighters are prepared for much more than what many people see on a day-to-day basis.

❤️🚒 Proudly serving the City of Peoria.

🚒 Wellness Wednesday 🚒

Being a firefighter means taking care of others every day—but don't forget to take care of yourself, too.

This week, focus on one simple habit that can make a big difference:
✅ Drink more water
✅ Get at least 7 hours of sleep
✅ Take a 10-minute walk
✅ Check in with a fellow firefighter
✅ Stretch before and after your shift

Physical fitness is only part of the equation. Mental and emotional wellness are just as important. A strong crew starts with healthy individuals who look out for themselves and each other.

Remember: Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and keep taking care of one another.

Training Tuesday:

Proper ventilation is key to a successful interior attack. Here we have crews perfecting their skills for proper hole placement and cutting technique. Done properly will relieve high heat and smoke from attack crews making it easier to extinguish the fire.

This week’s features Battalion Chief Rick Waldron! Rick Waldron has been a Peoria IL Fire Department firefighter for 20 years and is currently assigned to Shift 1 as the Battalion 1 Chief. B-1 is responsible for responding with a company of fire machines to emergency accidents, structure fires, severe medical emergencies, and events. Part of B-1's responsibility is ensuring that firefighters are at the locations they need to be, to organize training, and to provide support for their crews when necessary.

Fun Facts:

-When not at work, Rick enjoys golfing, playing guitar (you may have seen him leading our carolers around Christmas time in the hospital), and spending time with his son Ike.

-When Rick was asked why he loves being a Peoria Firefighter, he replied, "My Uncle Marty encouraged me and we as a family loved the idea of serving my home town!"

Thank you Chief Waldron for your hard work, dedication, and service to the City of Peoria!!
