The Peoria Riverfront Museum's Center for American Decoys tells the story of a truly indigenous American art forms: decoy carving.

The decoy, which may have begun to suit a purely utilitarian purpose, in bringing ducks to the water for hunting, has taken on a new life as fine art, carved and painted for beauty, as well as function.

To learn more about how The Center for American Decoys is keeping this traditional folk art alive, subscribe to our "Center for American Decoys" newsletter here: https://rb.gy/smfjkv

Big news for waterfowl hunters! IDNR has selected waterfowl season dates and zone lines for the 2026-2030 seasons based on a thorough review of scientific information and input from waterfowl hunters.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) regulations require states to establish zone lines for a five-year period, and the USFWS establishes the frameworks within which states must select their regulations.

Since 2011, Illinois has had four waterfowl hunting zones without split duck seasons. Over the past several years, hunters have shown increasing support for alternative options.

For the 2026-2030 seasons in Illinois, the former South-Central and South zones have been combined to form one South Zone. All other zone boundaries will remain the same because 90% of waterfowl hunters surveyed across the state indicated their county is in the correct zone.

In general, duck season start dates are similar to those used previously for the North and Central zones, with seasons ending slightly later through the use of a split. The South Zone structure will look different, with a duck season start date similar to that of the former South-Central Zone and with the second segment of the season ending in late January every year.

New zone lines and season dates will not take effect until the 2026 season. A map of waterfowl zone lines for the 2026-2030 seasons, as well as season dates for each zone, can be found online. https://huntillinois.org/waterfowl/ #2026-2030-waterfowl-zones-and-season-dates

This past Saturday, Peoria and Bartonville Ducks Unlimited Chapters hosted the Waterfowl Youth Hunt at Banner Marsh! We had 26 youth hunters take part — with several harvesting their first waterfowl. A big thank you to the Rice Lake DNR staff and The Rice Lake Youth Hunters Organization for hosting and making it another great day on the marsh!

IDNR would like to remind the public to report any large mortality events of waterfowl and other waterbirds during seasonal migrations.

Several dozen waterbirds, primarily snow geese, have died of suspected highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at Baldwin Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area in Randolph County recently. Other mortality events may occur in the state as waterfowl arrive from northern breeding grounds and congregate.

IDNR will continue to monitor for mortality events from HPAI during the seasonal bird migration. Members of the public are encouraged to report concentrations of five or more deceased birds found at one location. Reports can be made to the local IDNR district wildlife biologist here: https://wildlifeillinois.org/idnr-district-wildlife-biologist/

We had an incredible day this Saturday with 24 enthusiastic youth waterfowl hunters during our Waterfowl Youth Hunt! The weather was warmer than expected, but that didn’t stop these young hunters from having a great time in the field and harvesting a few birds. It’s always rewarding to see the next generation enjoying the outdoors and learning about wildlife conservation. Big thanks to Presleys Outdoors for the generous donation and thank you to everyone who helped make it a successful day!
