Meet the Guzman Family

We live in Eureka, IL with our 3 boys. Derby (9), Remy (7), & Lev (5). We enjoy staying active in our community and church family. You can find us biking through the neighborhood, out on the soccer fields or finding our next adventure.

We are coming up on our one year anniversary with Safe Families. We had always considered fostering or adopting but when we heard about Safe Families through our church, we felt like this was the right opportunity for us at the present time!

God always shows up with just allowing us to meet families that we wouldn’t have otherwise met. Watching our own boys love on the kids that come through our home is a sweet reminder of how deeply the Father loves us all.

If you are considering volunteering, we’d say absolutely, 110% yes. We have felt supported and encouraged along the way, it is also flexible which is very helpful for busy families.

We love making the children feel a part of our family in the best way we can! We continue with our normal routines and include them. Whether it’s Tuesday morning cereal day, social events or bedtime stories, they are a part of it!

A crisis—such as a parent losing housing, a severe mental health episode, domestic violence, substance use, or a child's unaddressed behavioral/mental health crisis—prompts someone (a doctor, school official, neighbor, or police officer) to call a state hotline or CPS.

A large majority of child welfare cases (around 62% to 76% nationally) stem from allegations of neglect rather than intentional physical abuse. Structural hardships like homelessness, lack of child care, or food insecurity are frequently interpreted by the system as parental unfitness.

At Safe Families for Children, we believe that when parents are supported by a caring, compassionate community, hope grows, burdens become lighter, and families are strengthened.

Prevention is widely recognized as an effective, efficient, and economically sound approach because it stops complications before they start, maximizes limited resources, and delivers a massive return on investment.

Preventing child abuse and neglect means meeting parents exactly where they are while also putting the health and safety of children first. Prevention makes keeping children and families together—safely—the top priority in any child welfare system.

There is a common misconception that child welfare intervention is primarily about the most extreme and heartbreaking cases that make headlines. Those cases do require immediate action. But the reality is that many families who come to the attention of child welfare—and drive up unmanageable caseload numbers—are facing challenges that could have been addressed much earlier with the right supports in place: a parent overwhelmed by circumstances, a family without stable housing or child care, a medical emergency, or a caregiver without anyone to call for help.

But we have also witnessed the opposite: when families receive timely support—safe child care during moments of crisis, access to basic necessities, connection to resources, and ongoing community-based support—the outcome changes drastically. Families stabilize. Parents gain confidence and tools. Children remain safely connected to the people who love them, and the child welfare system has no reason to get involved.

This is why we exist. Children Safe. Families Together.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Safe Families for Children (SFFC) stands alongside survivors. Our mission is to keep children safe and surround families facing crisis with a supportive community.

By offering a safe, temporary home for children and a network of extended family-like support for parents, we give moms and dads the breathing room they need to seek help, find safety, and rebuild their lives.
