Chicago residents, the CACC Dogs need OUR help! Contact your alderperson and urge them to support a national search for the director position. Don’t know who’s your alderperson? We gotchu!

https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/mayor/iframe/lookup_ward_and_alderman.html

Yesterday we represented 27 local animal welfare organizations in a press conference and during public comment at the Health & Human Services Committee meeting at City Hall.

We were joined by a breadth of active CACC volunteers, concerned advocates, and the fierce Alderwoman Ruth Cruz and Alderwoman Nicole Lee in asking City Council to stop the appointment of Susan Cappello as Executive Director of CACC and instead turn to a national search for a qualified director.

We were also joined by 700 public comments made by all of you. 675 of those were in favor of the national search.

Despite this incredible effort, the Committee voted to approve the appointment of Ms. Cappello. It was a disappointment, but unfortunately not a surprise.

We have two takeaways from the meeting:

1. We're not done yet. The appointment still needs approval from all of City Council. Email your Alderperson, tell them how you feel. Advocacy is not a spectator sport.

2. The advocacy efforts put forth are not in vain. We heard challenging questions from City Council, including requests for transparency and demands for accountability and rebuilding trust. While some Alders voted "yes" to the appointment it's clear they are also interested in a new era of scrutiny on a department that has been able to run wild for 3 years.

Lastly we want to make it known that OTAT has never been interested in speaking up only when we know we can win. OTAT speaks up when it's the right thing to do. It's been an honor to be joined by so many everyday Chicagoans, local organizations, and caring City Council Members to speak on something so deserving of a voice. Our efforts for more support in budget and more accountability in leadership will not end no matter who is Director.

Thank you Chicago, keep pushing.

**EASY ACTION ITEM NEEDED!**

One Tail at a Time is joined by a total of 25 local animal welfare organizations in asking City Council to vote NO on appointing Susan Cappello as the permanent Director of Chicago Animal Care and Control.

Joining the 25 groups are 17 Alderpersons who have signed a letter demanding that search, as well as a breadth of brave CACC volunteers who have come forward to protest the conditions under the current Interim Director, Ms. Cappello.

Under Ms. Cappello's interim leadership we have experienced a disturbing increase in dog deaths, a disturbing decrease in shelter conditions, and under her own admission dogs are currently getting out of their cages only once a week for 15 minutes at a time.

This is unacceptable, if you agree- here is your call to action:

1. Email your Alderperson and ask that they support the letter demanding a national search.

2. IMPORTANT: Email the Health and Human Resources Committee who will meet on this matter this coming Tuesday March 10th and tell them to vote NO on the appointment. Emails are due by tomorrow (Monday) at noon.

We live in trying times. Please DO NOT wait until it’s too late when trying to rehome your pup(s). Reach out to local resources as early as possible when needing assistance. 😥

This is the intake line outside CACC and it's like this every single day. 📸

In just the first 20 days of May, we’ve averaged 56 animals coming into the shelter per day, a jump from April’s 54 per day. That may not sound huge, but at this volume, every increase stretches our already limited resources to the brink. 💔

Many of the pets in this line are arriving as strays. But many are also being surrendered by their owners... people who likely love their pets, but may not know what else to do.

🙏 If you’re thinking about surrendering your pet, please understand:

➡️ You know your pet better than anyone.
➡️ You are their best advocate.
➡️ Rehoming directly gives your pet the best chance at landing in the right home.

When a pet is brought to the shelter, they become one of hundreds. In a noisy, unfamiliar environment, even the best pets can shut down, making it harder for them to stand out. 🐾

By rehoming your pet directly, you can share their likes, needs, routines, and quirks. These are things that can make a family fall in love. ❤️ That’s information we just don’t always receive.

CACC should be a last resort, reserved for animals truly in crisis.

And we want you to know, you don’t have to make that decision alone. PAWS Chicago is also onsite at CACC five days a week during intake hours to help with diversion support. Talk to us first. Learn what resources are out there. Let’s explore other options before you get in line with your family member.

We are here to help you succeed, not separate you from your best friend.

I was asked this morning to take in this energetic and playful 3 year old Mastiff boy named Bo.
His owner had a change in work schedule and is not home enough.
My house is more than full. I cannot take him at this time. They are thinking about surrendering him to the local pound in Moline, Il
They say he is good with other dogs and nice with children.
If you are interested in this dog please email [email protected]
