No Sons of Mine: https://ow.ly/9q1950VHTIN

Firefighting is full of tradition. A lot of us dream of our kids picking up the helmet and carrying on the legacy. But when people ask if I want my two boys to follow in my footsteps, I usually say “no”—or at least, “not yet.”

This job gave me a good life. It helped me provide for my family, gave me purpose, and I’m proud of the work I did. But it also came with a cost—PTS that still lingers, cancer, hearing loss, and some dark chapters I had to fight through. I’ve seen too many brothers face worse.

I believe we can make this job better. Safer. Smarter. Healthier.

Here’s what I want to see:
🔸Real cancer prevention
🔸Annual NFPA 1580 physicals
🔸Safer gear
🔸No stigma around mental health
🔸Schedules like 24/72 that let us live outside the station
🔸Support for our families

If my boys ever wear the badge, I want it to be in a fire service that takes care of its own—before, during, and after the job.

We are the ones that fix problems.

We are the ones who help people on their worst days, so it can be hard for us to share that we are struggling, and that’s where we run into trouble.

We keep it to ourselves because we don’t want others to know we are not ok.

We don’t want to appear weak.

We smile, work hard, and go about our business while feeling like everything is falling apart, so we work even harder to act like we have it all together.

We end up mentally exhausted pretending we are okay.

Stop

None of us are 100% okay. All of us have something in our lives we are praying will get better, and many of us have multiple things we are struggling with.

It’s okay to not be OK all the time.

One of our biggest problems is that we think we shouldn’t have any problems, leading many to feel like they have a bad life.

Life is hard, and we all have problems.

If you are struggling, stop keeping it to yourself, reach out to a brother or sister, and let them know you’re not okay.

We are all in this together, and we all have seasons when we need to lean on each other.

Check in on each other and be a brother.
