Dear ________
RE: CHANNEL MAINTENANCE DREDGING FOR THE VILLAGE OF PENTWATER
My name is ___________ and I am a resident of ___________________. I am writing to you today to ask for your assistance in funding for dredging of the channel connecting the Port of Pentwater with Lake Michigan. Increased shoreline erosion and significantly decreasing water have left our channel entrance critically shallow this fall which poses a serious threat to the viabil-ity and safety of the Pentwater harbor and it’s entrance in the coming spring and summer of 2025
Pentwater’s channel maintenance is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineer (USACE), Detroit District. In 2009 the federal government stopped funding USACE mainte-nance dredging of recreational harbors such as Pentwater and we have been left to fend for our-selves to maintain our channel entrance.
The economies of the Village of Pentwater and surrounding area relies heavily on seasonal and transient boating traffic. Our port supports the fishing community, and brings boats, guests, shoppers, and potential residents to the Pentwater area. We are also a harbor of refuge. The inability to use the channel would have a disastrous effect on the Pentwater area.
It is my understanding that while the President’s infrastructure bill provides funding for USACE harbor maintenance of commercial ports it leaves no funding for recreational ports such as ours. I implore you to do what you can to provide funding for maintenance dredging of our channel entrance in the spring of 2025 for the safety and viability of the Port of Pentwater.
Respectfully,
