Looking forward to having the USACE work on /clean out the wave attenuators in Pentwater Harbor channel. We will keep this page apprised of timeline (most likely 2027).

Due to the incredible amount of rain this spring, our extremely low water depths in Pentwater Lake and the Harbor Channel are seeing a rise of 12" or so. While we don't have a firm timeline yet, USACE dredging contract has been awarded to dredge Ludington and Pentwater harbors this spring/summer. Check back soon!

Thank you Congressman John Moolenaar for hearing the needs of your shallow harbor constituents!

The time is now to pledge your support and donation to keep the Pentwater Harbor Channel open for the 2025 season! See the attached flyer for the impact your pledge/donation will make!!

We will need $120,000 to be able to go forward. About $60,000 of this will need to come from private donations.

Please pledge by May 1. We will email you in early May to let you know if we met our target and to share how to make your donation to the Oceana Community Foundation. If we do not raise enough money, you can choose to withdraw your pledge, or make a donation to the Oceana Community Foundation for a future dredging effort. Please keep in mind that donations to the Oceana Community Foundation are tax deductible (based on IRS eligibility for tax deductions).

Dear ________
RE: CHANNEL MAINTENANCE DREDGING FOR THE VILLAGE OF PENTWATER
My name is ___________ and I am a resident of ___________________. I am writing to you today to ask for your assistance in funding for dredging of the channel connecting the Port of Pentwater with Lake Michigan. Increased shoreline erosion and significantly decreasing water have left our channel entrance critically shallow this fall which poses a serious threat to the viabil-ity and safety of the Pentwater harbor and it’s entrance in the coming spring and summer of 2025

Pentwater’s channel maintenance is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineer (USACE), Detroit District. In 2009 the federal government stopped funding USACE mainte-nance dredging of recreational harbors such as Pentwater and we have been left to fend for our-selves to maintain our channel entrance.

The economies of the Village of Pentwater and surrounding area relies heavily on seasonal and transient boating traffic. Our port supports the fishing community, and brings boats, guests, shoppers, and potential residents to the Pentwater area. We are also a harbor of refuge. The inability to use the channel would have a disastrous effect on the Pentwater area.

It is my understanding that while the President’s infrastructure bill provides funding for USACE harbor maintenance of commercial ports it leaves no funding for recreational ports such as ours. I implore you to do what you can to provide funding for maintenance dredging of our channel entrance in the spring of 2025 for the safety and viability of the Port of Pentwater.

Respectfully,

Regarding efforts to minimize sand shoaling that impacts West Michigan harbors like Pentwater:

In case you missed the front page article of The Oceana Echo, there will be a Public Engagement Event tomorrow, September 16 from 4 -6 pm at Channel Lane Park to present preliminary Beachfront Restoration Design concepts for managing sand and addressing other challenges. This is a collaborative effort with the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, Pentwater Township, Village of Pentwater, Charles Mears State Park and the Pentwater Lake Association to name a few. Sorry I dont have a link to the full article.

Join our collective effort to strengthen the socio-economic and environmental health of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin
