REPORT ON UWF HISTORIC TRUST OPEN HOUSE
June 1, 2019
I arrived at 9 AM (the requested arrival time) to find, as usual, that almost everyone had already arrived and set up. Olin arrived just as I finished unloading, and Dean Debolt from the UWF Library Special Collections very nicely offered to wheel my tools and display items into the Museum of Commerce so I could move my car thereby allowing Olin’s big truck access to Zaragoza St. There were just a couple parking spots left in the Tivoli parking lot. The participating carvers were Bill Pettus, Butch Carff, Olin Kennedy, Jim Wilson, and Lynne Robertson. I requested and received an extra table because more carvers than I had expected showed up for which I was very thankful!! Other groups sharing the space were a lady who did tatting, the Pensacola Historic Preservation Society (Quina House Museum), UWF Special Collections, and the dulcimer players.
We had a steady stream of visitors all day and answered many questions. Bill Pettus had a very good day selling walking sticks and wood spirit faces. The air conditioning kept us all comfortable, and the dulcimer players kept us entertained, at least for the morning. Coffee and donuts were available at the Bowden Bldg in the morning. Lunch, also at the Bowden, included sandwiches from Publix, fresh cut vegetables, chips, and cookies. Chilled bottles of water were offered periodically throughout the day,
A thunderstorm storm at about 2 PM ended all the outdoor activities about an hour earlier than planned, and some carvers left early, too, but some stayed on until the event ended at 3PM. All said, it was a very pleasant day, with nice folks and good camaraderie. And although the lighting was a little dim, some of us even got some carving done. Thank goodness for portable, battery operated lights.
