Bream Fishermen Association (BFA)

Bream Fishermen Association (BFA) That was the same year that USEPA was created as an outgrowth of the burgeoning environmental movement in the United States during the 1960s.

The BFA supports, develops, and implements programs which promote the conservation and recreational benefits of fishing, hunting, camping, and related outdoor activities. The Bream Fishermen Association (BFA) is a well known and a highly respected organization which has assisted the city, county, state, and region as environmental stewards in protecting our northwest Florida and south Alabama wate

rs for over 40 years. Loosely organized in the mid 1960’s as a result of water quality conditions deteriorating in the region; the BFA organized themselves into a non-profit organization chartered in Jan 1970. President Richard M. Nixon signed the Reorganization Plan No. 3 of 1970, the legal document that established the EPA. The creation of the EPA was an attempt to consolidate individual state environmental programs in a coordinated way under the control of one agency with clear-cut responsibility for environmental protection. The EPA opened its doors for business on December 2, 1970, less than eight months after the first Earth Day celebration, and 11 months after the BFA was established.

James Dudley (J.D.) Brown of Pensacola passed away (at 100) last week. His funeral was Thursday Jan. 28th. He was a lifelong resident of Bayou Grande and was a member of Bream Fishermen for decades. He was an Environmental Steward of Bream Fishermen at one time and was voted "Florida Water Conservationist of the Year" in 1987. His years of water quality testing in the Bay and other areas helped document pollution some industries were causing. J.D. will be greatly missed but will live on in our memories.

When exploring along coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico, you can see many live oysters in the shallow waters of estuaries and sounds. The shellfish attach themselves to solid things underwater like rocks and piling. Once an oyster attaches to a bed (a surface occupied by a group of oysters), it grows on the surface it attaches to as well as the other oysters around it. Sponsored by Clean Gulf Associates. Some of the first scientific studies of the Gulf of Mexico's fishery resources began in 1884 by the U.S. Commission of Fish and Fisheries. They eventually included surveys of the oyster beds in areas near Apalachicola, Florida, and the inshore waters of Alabama as well as other areas. Sponsored by Clean Gulf Associates. This beautiful adult otter was found dead on Bayou Boulevard by Pensacola cyclists.

This time of year the mullet and many other estuarine fish species enter the waters of the upper bayous and creeks for warmth and shelter. These parts of the watershed become a veritable buffet for a diversity of wildlife. Waterfowl are the first to identify these gatherings. Other more secretive predators like this otter also enjoy these seasonal fish runs.

Healthy waterways provide greenways and wildlife corridors for many species. Please be considerate of our watershed and watch for wildlife when boating / driving as you share the landscape with the natives.
