Black History Month is not just about remembrance — it is about truth.

It is about telling the full story of this nation: the brilliance, the resilience, the faith, the suffering, and the contributions that built what we now call America.

Celebration is not separate from lament, as we are reminded in this reflection by Joe McDaniel and Valerie Lund Mitchell, Co-Chairs of the Commission on Racial Justice Reconciliation of the Episcopal Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. To honor Black history is to acknowledge both the chains and the courage. It is to sit with the weight of injustice while also recognizing the sacred endurance of a people who refused to be erased.

In this moment, when conversations about history are often contested, the question “Why celebrate?” matters.

We celebrate because truth matters.
We celebrate because faith demands honesty.
We celebrate because reconciliation cannot exist without remembrance.
