In 2017, the Scenic Heights Neighborhood Association kept busy! We started by initiating a proposal to shape the neighborhood in the eyes of the city in the form of a 10-year plan, and it included asking for sidewalks throughout the neighborhood, especially on streets frequently used by students walking/cycling to & from the elementary school; changing the ‘feel’ of Langley to fight speeding with visual & physical deterrents, such as the crosswalk being installed at Adelyn Dr and a request for multi-use lanes to replace the parking & make cycling safer; and updating our parks to welcome new families with safe play spaces.
We’ve always had events throughout the year, and 2017 was no exception. We hosted a Spring Fling in April, Paint the Parks in July, Membership PotLuck Party in September, and Trunk or Treat in October. In May 2018, we hosted Pensacola’s first Spring Fling & Bike Rodeo at Scenic Heights Elementary School. With support from Pensacola Police Dept, FDOT, the Community Traffic Safety Team, and Truly Spokin Bike Shop, SHNA was able to give free helmets & bike safety checks to a number of neighborhood kids and adults. The rodeo was a great introduction to safe riding on the streets for our young riders! We’re hoping to inspire cyclists to combat the congestion of morning & afternoon school traffic. We look forward to another successful PotLuck & Trunk or Treat this year!
These are just our most recent accomplishments, as we’ve officially been an association since 2010, and have years of action under our belt:
Established a page and email list to enhance neighborhood communication. Secured a PCIP Grant from the City of Pensacola to provide Neighborhood Identification Signs to enhance community pride and brand our neighborhood as well as fund a gazebo and picnic tables in Belvedere Park.
Worked with Pensacola Police Departments Neighborhood Services division to establish a neighborhood watch program, installed “Crime Watch” signs throughout the neighborhood, distribution of BOLO’s information on Facebook and email list.
Worked with Public Works to install flashing speed signs on Langley and 4-way stops throughout neighborhood. Currently looking at additional infrastructure improvements. Also focusing on cleaning up and enhancing neighborhood parks by installing new signs, removing bushes and sprucing up equipment and benches, such as with the Paint the Parks event. Secured a drinking fountain and mister in Eastgate Park, and worked with the City to install a drinking fountain, walking path, ADA Accessible Ramps and additional improvements to Belvedere Park. We’re excited to see the coming updates to the playground structures at Hitzman Park.
Joined Neighborhood Services in the installation of Disc Golf Course and work continuously to coordinate other Neighborhood Events and park improvements, such as replacing broken equipment and benches.
