Every day looks a little different for the Opening Doors Northwest Florida Team HOPE outreach team.

This week, Tammy and our Escambia County Summer Youth Employment Program interns loaded up the IMPACT100 Mobile Outreach Van and traveled into Santa Rosa County to meet with an individual seeking housing assistance.

After completing the intake process, the team identified a common barrier standing between the client and housing opportunities — obtaining a birth certificate.

Without hesitation, the team shifted into problem-solving mode and headed to the Santa Rosa County Health Department to help remove that barrier.

But perhaps the most important component of this story is that the client was ready. Ready to take the next step. Ready to engage in the process. Ready to work toward stable housing.

Sometimes the path to housing starts with something as simple as a vital document. One step at a time, barriers become opportunities. When determination meets opportunity, progress happens.

Stay tuned for updates as this housing journey continues. Every document obtained, every appointment completed, and every barrier removed brings someone one step closer to a place to call home.

The $10 Token That Changes Lives

Sometimes the simplest solutions make the biggest difference.

Through our partnership with Waterfront Rescue Mission, Opening Doors Northwest Florida purchases $10 shelter tokens that provide a night's shelter, a warm meal, a shower, and access to supportive services for individuals experiencing homelessness.

When Team HOPE outreach staff and volunteers meet someone sleeping outside who cannot afford shelter and is actively seeking housing assistance, a token can provide immediate help and safety while connecting them to the resources needed to move toward stable housing.

What makes the program unique is that the tokens often come full circle. We discreetly mark the tokens we purchase and frequently see them return through Waterfront Rescue Mission's inventory when we buy additional tokens. From Opening Doors, to a person in need, to Waterfront Rescue Mission, and back again, each token continues creating value throughout the community.

More than currency, these tokens represent hope, dignity, and opportunity. For just $10, a token can help someone take the first step off the street and toward housing and a better future.

If you would like to be part of the solution, please consider making a donation to Opening Doors Northwest Florida to help purchase additional shelter tokens. Your contribution can provide immediate shelter and create a pathway to housing for someone in need.

This week, Opening Doors Northwest Florida was excited to welcome two interns from the Escambia County Summer Youth Employment Program as they joined our TEAM H.O.P.E. street outreach efforts and began experiencing firsthand what it means to serve our community.

Their first stop was Waterfront Rescue Mission, where they assisted with connecting individuals experiencing homelessness to Florida ID assistance and overnight shelter stays through the Waterfront Rescue Mission Token Program.

Street outreach is about meeting people where they are, building trust, and creating pathways to housing, healthcare, and supportive services. We are proud to have these young leaders learning alongside our outreach team.

A special shout-out to the City of Pensacola Homeless Liaisons and Kevin with Re-Entry Alliance for partnering with us in the field and helping make a difference in the lives of our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

Welcome to TEAM H.O.P.E. — we are glad to have you on the journey!

Opening Doors Northwest Florida was humbled to attend the Jayla's Voice Summit, where the faces and stories of those lost to fentanyl served as a powerful reminder that this crisis is not about statistics—it is about people, families, and lives cut tragically short.

What made the event especially impactful was knowing it was organized by a mother who lost her daughter to fentanyl. Turning personal tragedy into action, she brought together families, community leaders, healthcare professionals, law enforcement agencies, advocates, and service providers committed to awareness, prevention, and solutions. Her leadership was a powerful reminder of why we must work together, listen, learn, and help where and when we can.

The fentanyl crisis affects every community and requires a coordinated response. Through collaboration, compassion, and shared commitment, we can strengthen partnerships, support families, raise awareness, and help save lives.

Opening Doors Northwest Florida was honored to have the opportunity to speak at the Northwest Florida Mental Health Task Force, convened by State Representative Michelle Salzman. Since 2021, this volunteer coalition has brought together community leaders, healthcare systems, law enforcement, and service organizations to improve behavioral health outcomes across our region.

Homelessness and behavioral health are closely connected. Many individuals experiencing homelessness face challenges related to mental health, substance use, trauma, and access to care. Addressing these issues requires collaboration among housing providers, healthcare professionals, local governments, first responders, and community organizations.

During the discussion, Opening Doors Northwest Florida shared information about homelessness trends in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties, the role of Coordinated Entry, street outreach efforts, housing navigation, and the importance of strengthening partnerships that connect individuals to both housing and behavioral health services.

We appreciate Representative Salzman and the Mental Health Task Force for creating a forum where more than 100 professionals and community leaders can come together to identify solutions, improve access to care, and build a stronger system of support for our most vulnerable neighbors.

Effective community response begins with partnership, communication, and a shared commitment to helping people move toward stability, recovery, and hope.
