Pensacola Organic Gardeners

Pensacola Organic Gardeners "Hands in the dirt"folks that like to grow organically. Our mission is to teach people about organics

Pensacola Organic Gardeners are a community of "Plant People" that understand an organic approach to growing food or practicing general horticulture is safer and more productive for family, community, and the biological ecosystem. Because we are on the edges of both sub-tropical and temperate -- for us it is "Apples AND Oranges." With that opportunity, the Pensacola Organic Gardeners organization

seeks to identify varieties of edibles that are most productive and resilient in our harsh coastal climate. Also, we take pride in having members that are experimenting with various gardening methods and controls who are always happy to share during our monthly information exchanges, focus presentations and stops on our Local Garden Tours. If you are new to gardening or an old timer, stop by for some information, some community, and some valuable long-time experience!

Did you know a single hummingbird can visit over 1,000 flowers per day?

As they drink, pollen from the stamen is deposited on the hummingbird's head, forehead, or bill. This pollen is then transferred to the next flower, allowing for fertilization and seed production. They are also crucial for maintaining plant health by aiding in the reproduction of plants that prevent soil erosion

Trumpet creepers, fire brush, coralbean, red buckeyes, and coral honeysuckles are just a few examples of native species you can plant in your pollinator gardens in preparation for the great migration.

🌡️ HUMMINGBIRDS ARE HEADING NORTH! 🌡️

This warmer pattern and southerly winds are perfect conditions for spring migration! Hummingbird arrivals are already being reported across the South and this week's tracking data shows new activity from Texas to Florida.

The map shaded in red shows confirmed sightings of Ruby-throated and Rufous hummingbirds along the Gulf Coast and Southeast this week. These tiny birds are incredibly attuned to seasonal changes and the atmospheric setup we're seeing right now is textbook spring migration conditions.

Here's what to expect:
• First major wave hitting the Deep South this week.
• Southerly wind patterns providing favorable flight conditions.
• Peak activity along coastal regions where food sources are abundant.
• Males arriving first, followed by females 1-2 weeks later.

If you live in the South, now's the time to get your feeders cleaned and ready! These beautiful birds will be stopping by to refuel on their incredible 2,000+ mile journey northward this spring. Have you spotted any early arrivals in your area yet?

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
We made plant themed Valentines
For you to send to your boo.

Save and share your favorite with your valentine or plant-loving boo before you (understandably) get distracted by plants again.
