Gulf Coast Diplomacy is part of the Global Ties U.S. national network of organizations focusing on international exchange and achieves its mission through the following three program pi

llars:

* International Exchange and Citizen Diplomacy: Gulf Coast Diplomacy facilitates professional and personal interaction between international leaders during official visits to the central Gulf Coast and their local counterparts in specific industries and areas of interest. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and other federal exchanges.

* Education: Gulf Coast Diplomacy promotes a greater understanding of global affairs by providing public events and educational activities for both youth and adults that enable people in our community to explore topics of global importance. Such programming includes Great Decisions programs and Youth Diplomats.

* Hospitality: Gulf Coast Diplomacy’s activities and partnerships promote the central Gulf Coast as an important center of commerce, culture, and tourism. In addition, Gulf Coast Diplomacy facilitates opportunities for local residents and professionals to socialize with and host international visitors. COMMUNITY IMPACT AND BENEFIT
By forging cultural, educational, and business relationships with the global community through citizen diplomacy, Gulf Coast Diplomacy’s activities and initiatives have a significant positive impact on our region. Our programs:

* Increase trust, respect, and understanding between local residents and people from throughout the world;

* Enable access to expertise from the global community to address local issues and challenges;

* Advance learning and educational goals for both youth and adults;

* Support career preparation and workforce development by providing opportunities to work in and understand the global economy;

* Support the cultural and hospitality economy of the Gulf Coast; and

* Support U.S. foreign policy and national security goals through citizen diplomacy.

This Labor Day, we’re thinking about the people behind the expertise.

International exchange in Northwest Florida works because people who are busy doing their own jobs are willing to make time to share what they know.

They are educators and entrepreneurs. Attorneys and law enforcement officers. Researchers and technology professionals. Government employees and nonprofit leaders. Small business owners and executives.

When international exchange participants come to Pensacola, these Northwest Floridians open their offices, answer questions, demonstrate their work, share lessons learned, and sometimes tackle surprisingly difficult questions.

In doing so, they do something else: they show the world what Northwest Florida knows and does well.

This Labor Day, we’re grateful for the professionals throughout our community who have made international exchange part of their work.

Thank you for putting Northwest Florida expertise at the table.

We’re proud to be part of the International Visitor Leadership Program, the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program.

Every year, citizen diplomats across Northwest Florida share their time, expertise, workplaces, homes, and community with emerging leaders from around the world. Those local connections are an important part of what makes the IVLP work, and we’re grateful to everyone who represents our community and country.

Take a look at the State Department’s celebration of the IVLP. If you watch closely, you might even spot someone from the Gulf Coast Diplomacy office!

What does Northwest Florida bring to the table? A lot.

Every international exchange we host depends on local professionals who are willing to share what they know.

They are educators, entrepreneurs, attorneys, law enforcement officers, researchers, nonprofit leaders, business executives, elected and government officials, and many others.

They open their offices. They answer questions. They talk candidly about what works, what doesn’t, and what they’ve learned along the way.

And in the process, Northwest Florida expertise becomes part of an international professional conversation.

To everyone who has ever given an hour of your time to meet with an international exchange participant: thank you.

You are part of what makes Pensacola worth visiting.

What can $50 do?

A great international exchange doesn’t begin when participants arrive in Pensacola.

It begins weeks, and sometimes months, earlier: identifying the right community resources, developing professional appointments, building schedules, preparing materials, and making sure the pieces come together.

A $50 gift to Gulf Coast Diplomacy 250 supports the work behind the exchange, helping us create high-quality programs that connect international exchange participants with the people and expertise of Northwest Florida.

Our campaign goal is $25,000 in honor of America’s 250th birthday. While we invite those who can to consider a special $250 gift, you don’t have to give $250 to make a difference.

3,700+ and counting.

Since 2008, Gulf Coast Diplomacy has welcomed more than 3,700 international exchange participants to Pensacola.

That’s a number we’re proud of, but it only tells half the story.

Think about how many Northwest Floridians have been part of those exchanges: professionals who shared their expertise, families who opened their homes, students who asked questions, businesses and organizations that welcomed groups, and community members who pulled up a chair at an Exchange Café.

International exchange doesn’t happen to a community. At its best, it happens with a community.

For more than 18 years, Northwest Florida has been part of the story.

And we’re still counting.

Before an international exchange participant ever arrives in Pensacola…

There are proposals to write. Community resources to identify. Professional appointments to arrange. Schedules to build. Transportation and hotels to coordinate. Program books to prepare. And quite a few emails.

Why all the preparation?

Because bringing an international exchange to Northwest Florida is about much more than filling a schedule. We are matching the interests of emerging leaders from around the world with the expertise that exists right here in our community.

The result is a program designed to be valuable on both sides of the exchange.

So when you see exchange participants meeting with a local business, sitting in a courtroom, talking with Youth Diplomats, or sharing coffee with Northwest Florida professionals, there’s a lot you didn’t see that made that conversation possible.

And we think it’s worth it.

Meet a Community Partner: Historic Pensacola

When international exchange participants come to Northwest Florida, we want them to understand the place they are visiting, not just attend professional meetings.

Historic Pensacola helps us tell that story.

Through its museums, historic properties, and interpreters, exchange participants discover the people and events that shaped our community and see Pensacola’s place in the larger American story.

Historic Pensacola has welcomed many of our groups over the years, and most recently helped us introduce both international exchange participants and our Youth Diplomats to the history in their own backyard.

We’re grateful to have such a wonderful resource right here at home.

Some of the best diplomacy happens around the dinner table.

Home hospitality gives international exchange participants something no professional appointment can: an evening in a Northwest Florida home.

There’s no agenda. Just dinner, conversation, questions, stories, and the chance to experience everyday American life with the people who live it.

For local hosts, it’s also an opportunity to bring international exchange directly into their homes and families. Children meet people from countries they may only know from a map. Neighbors become part of the conversation. And sometimes a dinner that was supposed to last two hours goes much longer.

You don’t have to travel far to experience the world.

Sometimes you just have to set another place at the table.

Diplomacy with a hometown return.

International exchange activity brings nearly $400,000 into the Northwest Florida economy each year.

But the hometown return goes beyond dollars.

International exchange connects local businesses and organizations with emerging leaders from around the world. It puts Northwest Florida expertise in front of international professionals. It creates opportunities for local students. And it gives our community a direct role in representing America to the world.

International exchange works best when communities have expertise worth sharing. Northwest Florida has plenty.

Cybersecurity and artificial intelligence are two areas where our region has become an increasingly valuable resource for international exchange participants.

Through Gulf Coast Diplomacy programs, emerging leaders from around the world have met with Northwest Florida researchers, educators, entrepreneurs, technology professionals, and cybersecurity experts to examine challenges their own communities are confronting.

And those conversations don’t only benefit the people who come here.

They put Northwest Florida expertise in an international room, create professional connections for local organizations, and reinforce our region’s growing role in technologies that matter to America’s economic competitiveness and security.
