The people defeat Flock!
After months of public outcry and the people consistently mobilizing and organizing against Flock mass surveillance in our communities, the City of Pensacola and Escambia County have announced they are suspending the use of Flock cameras. This announcement comes on the heels of similar announcements in neighboring counties and at the state level.
Make no mistake: this is a people’s victory. Across all lines of division, our community has been working tirelessly to defeat Flock – petitioning, rallying, mobilizing to city council meetings, and more. In fact, it was a people’s investigation that first exposed the shady nature by which Pensacola’s Flock contract was secured in the first place: without city council, without public knowledge or input, and most alarmingly, paid for through misappropriated funds intended to help our community fight the ongoing opioid crisis.
This scandal has had reverberating effects on public opinion. Every mayoral candidate had to contend with constituents asking: “what will you do about Flock?”, while articles documenting the movement to shut down Flock across the state have pointed time and again to Pensacola’s corrupt funding and our struggle against it. For months, the Mayor and the Pensacola Police and the Sheriff's office held firm in defense of Flock, which they had gone to all this trouble to implement locally. But ultimately, their efforts couldn’t stand up to the pressure from the people.
The fight against Flock shows that when we unite and fight together, we can and will win.
