Happy May! Are you ready to start 14 Days of Green? This post has the first 7 days of the challenge. The last seven days will be posted next week! Remember, this runs from May 1-14! If you’re in Mrs. Parnell’s class, remember to print out the checklist from the link in the last post or keep track of what you do with pictures so you can get extra credit. Even if you’re not in Mrs. Parnell’s class, make sure you keep track of what you do. There are prizes available!

Your first challenge is to check out PNJ. Read an article that you think has something to do with environmentalism and write down what you think. Do you think the issue is truly about environmentalism? Do you think a solution proposed is a good one? What criticisms do you have? What is the role of local news in environmentalism? The possibilities are endless!

As the school year winds down, I want to give one last challenge to you guys. Just like the past challenges, 14 Days of Green will have one challenge per day with varying levels of involvement. It starts May 1 (this Saturday!) and the last day is May 14. The challenges are already up on Legume’s website, and there’s a link in the post to a checklist so you can keep track of the challenges you’ve completed!

There are prizes available for students who complete challenges! And if you’re a student of Mrs. Parnell, you have an opportunity for extra credit for the challenges you complete! Remember to keep track of what you do with the checklist on Legume’s website and/or pictures. Send a copy of your checklist/pictures to Legume at the end of the challenge to make sure you’re in the running for prizes!

Guess who's back? As the school year winds down, I want to give you one last online challenge. Environmentalism is an overarching cause that touches on all aspects of life. It's not just about using less plastic or bringing a tote bag to the store (though both of those are good steps to take). It's....

I’m back! After a long break, I thought it appropriate for the first post to be on Earth Day. Though we still can’t celebrate earth day in Seville Square this year, there are online events, activities, etc. that you can still take part in if you would like! If you don’t want to do that, take 5 minutes to look up a piece of positive environmental news. Maybe a university student found a way to reuse rotting food to make energy. Maybe a state banned plastic. Maybe a university decided to forego all fossil fuel use. Sometimes getting proper environmental legislation and protection seems impossible, but everything counts. What do you think you want to do today?

P.S. 14 Days of Green will come back soon! Keep your eyes peeled...there will be multiple prizes!

Legume tries to focus on reduce, reuse, recycle, first and foremost. It’s important to reduce the amount of trash that you make and be mindful of what you create or buy, especially since it’s hard to make it go away or decompose. But do you know what your trash is? Where it goes? Did you know that the consumer, the public, is likely not the biggest producer of waste? Click the link below to read a new article on my website!

First, a happy holidays to all of you! There is a new article on Legume, going through a few good things that happened in 2020 for the environment. I encourage you to read it and conduct your own research, thinking about the pros and cons of each event. The link will be attached below.

Today I took those boxes of canned goods and foods to Manna Food Bank. Even though I took pictures of the food before I went, it didn’t really sink in how much it really was. When the man weighing the food finally called out “379 lbs!” I was floored. Can you imagine? 379 lbs. At least $500 worth of food. And all thanks to everyone who participated in Green December. Thanks to you, people who have been hit hard by everything this year will have food to eat. Thanks to you, 379 lbs of food will be distributed to the community. I’m honored to be a part of this, and I’m extremely happy that so many people are willing to give a little more to help others.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Green December this year! 7 Days of Green was a great success. So many of you participated, and the level of excitement that everybody has is astounding! For the plastic bag collection, PHS collected more than 3500 plastic bags for proper recycling, more than double the last collection got.

And on top of that, you’ve contributed to another cause. In support of this collection, East Hill Publix donated 6 boxes of food stuffs and materials to Manna Food Bank, including things like canned foods and clothing. Plus, an anonymous donor decided to match Publix’s canned good donation, adding ~100 canned goods in total!

So let me summarize. You’ve recycled your plastic grocery bags, keeping them out of the trash and waterways, preventing pollution and learning about proper recycling practices. And you’ve donated more than 6 boxes of materials to Manna Food Bank. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everybody who participated. I hope Green December inspires all of you to continue learning about how you can be your own environmentalist and look forward to a greener world!

Thank you to Publix, Manna Food Bank, and the students and teachers of PHS for your help. None of this could have happened without you!

The winners of the plastic bag collection will be announced shortly. I will also be contacting your teachers to make sure that students get their extra credit.

Day 7 is here! Wow, that felt like it went by so quickly. I want people who do this challenge to walk away with the understanding that they can each be environmentalists in their own way. That’s why today’s challenge is to make your own “green!” This could mean making up your own green challenge, wearing something green today, planting something you’ve always wanted to, or taking some local action like reading up on policies and understanding what you can do to influence them. The choices are endless!

As this is the final day, you must send me proof of all 7 completed days of the challenge if you would like extra credit. Please remember to include the teacher you would the credit for and your class period. IF YOU ARE TRADITIONAL make sure you scan the QR code on the bag collection boxes to record your donation. I CANNOT GIVE YOU EXTRA CREDIT IF YOU DO NOT SCAN THE QR CODE. Spread the word please! Even if you are remote, tell your traditional friends to make sure people know!

We’re almost at the end of the challenge! Have you been keeping up? Take some time today to share Legume and Green December with three of your friends. Tag three friends in the comments, send them a message, share through your story, whatever. Just make sure to spread the word! The more people can learn about making greener choices, the more changes we can make in the future. Remember that you must complete all 7 days to receive extra credit for this challenge. If you’re a traditional student, make sure you bring in your plastic bags to the boxes tomorrow and scan the QR code to receive credit!

Just like reusing materials in real life, old tips and ideas can be reused as well. Go back through this account and find one tip that you want to do today. Try to find one that you haven’t done or seen before. Maybe you don’t even want to do one. Maybe you want to leave a critique as to why that tip is ineffective. Whatever you do, make sure you comment on this post with the tip you did, tag legume on your story, or message me with the proof of your completed challenge. Remember, only by completing all seven days can you get extra credit!

We’ve talked about this before on Legume. Especially since it’s the holiday season, people are buying new clothes and throwing away other perfectly good articles of clothing. Make a difference today and find a way to reuse your old clothing, whether it be cutting it up to use as rags, up cycling it in some way, or donating it to a clothing drive or thrift store to give it new life. Clothing waste is a huge part of climate change, and while the individual consumer cant fix everything with one piece of clothing, it certainly makes a difference. Get creative! Even if it’s just beginning to wear something that you haven’t in a while or giving it to someone else, find a way to keep using that old piece of clothing!

Remember to take a picture of your completed challenge and tag legume, comment on this post, or message me at the end of the week with your proof of all 7 completed challenges, the teacher(s) you would like extra credit for, and your period.
