Can teacher in-service programs include sessions where educators receive free books and learn how classroom libraries can help irrigate book deserts, spread the joy of reading, and raise literacy levels? Last Wednesday, Trenton Public School District, NJ invited BookSmiles to present to 1,800 educators and support staff members.

Our goal is to ensure that every child in the city grows up with a library of their own, starting in infancy. By building children’s access to books at home over time, we can help address America’s literacy crisis—one child, one home library, and one community at a time.

Teachers and adminstrators learned about our Fair Book Fair program that can replace or augments the traditional corportate book fair. Every child gets three free books. Learn more about this program by visiting our website: https://www.booksmiles.org/request-a-fair-book-fair.html

Happy National Mad Hatter Day!

Ever wonder why it’s celebrated on October 6 (10/6)?

In the original illustrations for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter’s hat bears a tag reading “In this style 10/6.” It was actually the price—10 shillings and 6 pence—but American fans turned 10/6 into October 6!

The quirky holiday officially began in 1986 as a day to embrace a little silliness and fun.

So today, channel your inner Mad Hatter and celebrate with a good book!

The Book Bank at 100 Melrose Ave, Cherry Hill is now open to accept 20 volunteers per shift and we accept book donations of all types, whether a bag or a filled carload - kids and adult books.

Sandwiched between Larry and donor Rob Katz (the gentleman wearing a blue shirt, flanked by his son), are five teachers who applied for and won a free classroom library consisting of 2,400 books - an entire pallet! Faith, Ansel, and Fortunata represent the School District of Philadelphia. Tsai-Ann teaches in Newark, and Rachael works in Lindenwold, NJ. They will undoubtedly share with colleagues.

With BookSmiles, teachers no longer have to pay several hundred dollars out of pocket for a basic classroom library. This is how we solve the book-access problem. This is how we combat this nation's literacy crisis!

The BookSmiles Book bank - located at 100 Melrose Ave. in Cherry Hill - welcomed a host of elected officials, NJEA representatives, board members, friends, and volunteers on a perfect Friday morning.
