Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.-The State of New Jersey Official page for the State of New Jersey. On March 25, 1948, the first Graduate chapter was chartered at Camden's Macedonia A.M.E. Church. Triumphant Soror Rev.

Alexzina Brown initiated a charter for Gamma Nu Zeta Chapter with the support of Sorority President Lullelia Walker Harrison and Regional Director Evelyn Hunt. Charter members Catherine Johnson, Evelyn Ellerbee, Jean Lewis, Katherine Besselieu Ross and Inez Brooks laid the foundation for the State's future record of excellent service to people in need. Under the tenure of Past State Director Geral

dine Johnson the statewide Founders' Day Celebration was started. As our Zeta family expanded, the States first Amicae auxiliary, Zeta Amicae of Camden was founded in 1956. After several years of inactivity, it was reactivated in 2012. In addition to Camden there are nine other auxiliaries in the state: Zeta Amicae of Princeton-Trenton which was also chartered in 1956, and reorganized in 1969; Zeta Amicae of Newark/Orange chartered in 1973; Zeta Amicae of Plainfield chartered in 1975; Zeta Amicae of Moorestown chartered in 1985; Zeta Amicae of Gloucester County chartered in 1995; Zeta Amicae of Atlantic City, chartered in 1999; Zeta Amicae of Jersey City chartered in 2012; Zeta Amicae of Middle & Southern Middlesex County chartered in 2014; and Zeta Amicae of Monmouth and Ocean Counties chartered in 2021. In 1954 Chi Alpha became the State's first Undergraduate city chapter. It was established in the Princeton/Trenton area. Chi Alpha is now located at Rider University. Omicron Epsilon at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) in 1974 became the State's first campus-based undergraduate chapter. The Garden State's distinction in Zetadom is further enhanced by the residency of two past International Presidents, the late Dr. Deborah Wolfe and Dr. Edith V. Francis, our former National Educational Foundation Chair, Dr. Kathryn T. Malvern who also served as a Past Regional Director, and Chair of Regional Directors. Gina Merritt-Epps, Esq., who served as the 14th New Jersey State Director, currently serves as the Atlantic Regional Director. We are excited to see how our Garden State Zetas will continue to do the awesome work of our organization.

Happy Birthday to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated’s 24th International President, Dr. Mary Breaux Wright!

We celebrate the life, legacy, and leadership of Dr. Wright, who faithfully served as International President from 2012 to 2018, following two consecutive terms as National First Vice-President. A visionary and trailblazer, Dr. Wright made an indelible mark on our sisterhood and the communities we serve.

Her many accomplishments include serving as chief researcher and transcriber for Torchbearers of a Legacy, Zeta’s first published history book and launching the National Elder Care and Elder Abuse Initiative, the signature program of her administration. She oversaw the modernization of the sorority’s website with online registration and financial capabilities and implemented the impactful Seven-Point Plan focused on community service, health, education, and chapter development.

She also led Zeta to become the only Greek-lettered organization to partner with the National Science Foundation through the Human Genome Project, and in 1998, she was responsible for the sorority being awarded Non-Governmental, or NGO, Status by becoming a member of the United Nations.

Today, we honor your leadership, your legacy, and your unwavering commitment to excellence. We love you, and we hope you’re enjoying a beautiful and well-deserved celebration!

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated honors Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, as an historic moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, marking the true beginning of freedom for all.

We proudly recognize the efforts of our own trailblazing Soror, Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” whose unwavering advocacy helped make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday in 2021.

Today, we celebrate emancipation, reflect on our ancestors’ strength and resilience, and recommit to the work of advancing justice, equity, and unity. Through education, action, and solidarity, we move closer to a world rooted in true freedom for all.

Elder abuse is a serious global issue impacting millions of older adults every year. On this important day, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated stands united in raising awareness about the mistreatment and neglect of our elders.

We are committed to creating a world where our seniors are respected, valued, and protected. Let’s take action by:

💙Educating ourselves and others
💙Supporting and checking in on our elderly community members
💙Advocating for the rights and dignity of older adults

Together, we can be a voice for those who may not be heard.

Today, families worldwide have an empty seat at their dinner table because a family member made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our country’s freedom.

Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten. Today, we pause to reflect on their selflessness and the profound impact they’ve had on our nation, and their families who bear the burden of their absence 🕊️
