VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Upper Lake Ranger District is hosting volunteer work days this weekend on our OHV trails! Meet up at 9 a.m. at Penny Pines Campground this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10-11.

We have had a TON of rain and wind the last few weeks, 15 inches in 10 days and 50 mph winds, which means a large number of downed trees. Trails are still closed, but we are working hard with our volunteers to remove downed trees while soils have time to dry out. We need people to help with trail assessments, removing branches and debris so our trails are safe again. Hope to see you there! 💪

PRESS RELEASE: PWORA Kicks Off 2026 with Leadership Continuity, Funding Focus, and Renewed Forest Partnerships

The Post Wildfire OHV Recovery Alliance (PWORA)/RestoreTrails.Org will hold its first Board of Directors meeting of 2026 on January 12.

At this meeting, Ted Cabral has agreed to continue serving as President, providing leadership continuity as the organization advances its trail restoration and recovery mission.

A key priority for early 2026 will be to strengthen RestoreTrails through a more structured, sustainable funding approach. PWORA is developing a proposed Business Partnership and Fundraising Program designed to diversify revenue, build long-term stability, and expand restoration capacity.

As part of this effort, President Cabral will attend the upcoming California OHMVR Grants Workshop to ensure PWORA remains aligned with program priorities, timelines, and future grant opportunities. In addition, PWORA is exploring private grant opportunities that may complement OHMVR funding and further diversify RestoreTrails’ revenue sources.

PWORA has also reinitiated outreach with the Mendocino National Forest. The goal is to rebuild momentum on priority trail work and identify new opportunities for collaboration moving forward.

Together, these efforts reflect PWORA’s continued commitment to leadership, stewardship, and long-term recovery of OHV trail systems impacted by wildfire and other disasters.

Merry Christmas to all.

⚠Public Safety Access Notice⚠
Did you know that most National Forest roads and gates at Lake Tahoe close for the winter season around mid-November? Check out the closing dates using the Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) at tinyurl.com/yx544sch. Be sure to zoom in and select the map for either north or south Lake Tahoe.

The Lake Tahoe Basin typically receives large amounts of snow in the winter, particularly at higher elevations. Most Forest Service roads are non-paved and serve as access points for these areas.

For public safety and resource protection, the Forest Service closes these roads in the winter to prevent forest visitors from getting stranded in the backcountry and to prevent damage to non-paved roads from vehicles getting stuck.

Please note, the photo used in this post is a stock USDA Forest Service Photo intended to illustrate why non-paved forest roads close in the winter and does not represent current conditions.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

✅ Project Completed: St. John’s Mountain Trail, Mendocino National Forest
PWORA’s RestoreTrails™ program has successfully completed the St. John’s Mountain OHV trail restoration project—thanks to the incredible efforts of volunteers, partners, and supporters.
🔹 Removed hazardous rebar & burned barriers
🔹 Installed natural trail delineators
🔹 Preserved a 10-mile OHV trail system for motorcycles, UTVs, ATVs, Jeeps & 4x4s
This work was made possible with funding from the California OHV Grant Program, Trail Trust, and support from MetalCloak (who kept volunteers fueled with lunch 🙌).
🌲 With wildfire recovery ongoing, this project proves what the OHV community can accomplish together. Now we’re preparing for the Winter 2025/2026 RestoreTrails season, and your donations are critical to keep the work moving forward.
