The famous Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor was designed by a Frenchman, Frederick A. Bartholdi, a Freemason. The Grand Lodge of New York laid the cornerstone with masonic ceremonies on August 5, 1885.

The first historically American fraternal organization black was the Prince Hall Masonry, which dates back to the mid-18th century.

Others include the Order of the Eastern Star. Other fraternities followed their example, such as Sigma Pi Phi, which is not a collegiate and also known as The Boulé, founded in 1904; as well as the first black collegiate, Alpha Phi Alpha, formally established as a fraternity in 1906, at Cornell University.

The earliest sorororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, founded in 1908 at HBCU, Howard University and Delta Sigma Theta, founded in 1913, also at Howard University.
